I have mostly just ate fruit and vegetables for the last week. Yesterday I had some rice cakes and had a really bad headache. I hope it was a coincidence and not another thing I can't eat
Not rice!: I have mostly just ate fruit... - Gluten Free Guerr...
Not rice!
I guess the only way you will know is to 'experiment' and try them again.
I recently went to Thailand where eating was a nightmare as gluten in everything so I mostly lived on rice! You should be ok with it, hopefully just a coincidence 😃
Perhaps try ordinary boiled rice rather than rice cakes? Just a small serving to start with. Make sure to eat some protein along with your veg,
Rice is generally regarded as the least problematic of the grains. But it does still contain a protein that is similar to gluten, so can theoretically get you if you are very sensitive.
Before you start testing that you should probably try to introduce some fats and meats. After all, starchy foods are not essential, but protein and fats are. Start with something relatively unusual (but still yummy) like duck.
I've never heard that about rice protein. Have you got any more information?
Ta.
It's all in a wonderful book called Grain Brain by David Perlmutter.
But let's be clear, rice protein is related to gluten, but not the same. It won't cause coeliac disease, but that is not to say it's necessarily harmless.
I'm vegan lol
Being vegan rather ties your hands! Morally laudable, but not everyone can stay healthy without animal products.
My understanding is that the vegan diet pretty well depends on grains to supply the proteins (specific amino acids) that don't occur in legumes, but I am sure that with some careful research you could find foods that supplied all your amino acid needs.
You also need to be very careful to get the full range of essential fatty acids. I'm ignorant in that field, being an omnivore, but I imagine the information is out there.
I was advised by my Naturopath that it was ok to eat ricecakes as long as you include fat - i.e. nut butter, etc.
Me again. There are three foodstuffs which you can survive on when all fail. Rice, pears and pork with plain water are they. So surprised that rice cakes produced a reaction. When buying rice cakes I watch out for adulterated ones, with corn, Marmite, sesame and chocolate. Just plain, low salt are my preferred purchase. Ditto rice grains. Should be plain rice without anything added. As yet not bought any rice grains coated in oil etc.
Try rice again.
