Does any body else have problems with soya in gluten free products. Someone bought me some gluten free goodies so I wasn't left out when it's someone's birthday at work. But I did not feel right the day after and this has happened before so I now avoid it. Thanks

Hi tetloww,

I have issues with soya, so I avoid it. It wipes me out with fatigue.

I hope this helps.

Yep can't have that either. Apparantly there are a few foods where their protein structure is very similar to gluten & the body mistakes it for gluten ie cross reacts, soy, dairy & oats being the biggies. There is a test you can have done with cyrex labs to confirm whether you do cross react etc, but if your body is telling you it doesn't like it, then that tells you really & saves the trouble & cost of a test. I did the test cos I wanted to ensure I wasn't going mad! 😀

I read that other GF food items like soy and corn can also have the same impact on you as eating gluten. It's good to recognize the triggers so you know what to avoid. Sometimes I can't help it and eat a GF processed food to feel "normal" but I usually feel better if I avoid grains (and soy and dairy) altogether.

I cannot eat Soya either!

Thank you all. That answers my question nicely and now know I'm not misreading signals or going MAD. X

My son has been gluten free for 3.5 years. He was born allergic to milk and always had soya. He started complaining of feeling sick and had to see a specialist. Last year I was ill and could get his soya milk so he had to do without for 2 days. When I picked him up from school he said Mum I havnt felt sick all day, same the next day so we told the paediatrician who concluded he's intolerant to soya. He's not had it since. Yes we find its in lots of gluten free stuff. I just make him cake and biscuits if he wants a treat. It's in lots of chocolate too but he can have Twirls, Fudge, Flake, Crunchie and Wispa.

Someone told me all the soya in the world is genetically modified so not a bad thing to avoid it.

In countries where soya is part of the diet, it is fermented with a culture (miso, tempeh etc) to make it digestible and less likely to cause problems. It's also only eaten in small quantities.

Unfermented soya in the form of milk, flour, is a modern invention and best avoided, as it contains 'anti nutrients' like phytic acid.
