Hi Beaton

It seems to be very common that if you've got one autoimmune problem, you have a good chance of having another.

Having had a look on the net, it would seem that untreated coeliac disease may possibly be associated with liver problems, like autoimmune hepatitis, but it's not a given. Have a Google, or talk to your doctor if you're worried.

Yes I've heard the same. In fact my CD was diagnosed from routine bloods for a diagnosis for liver disease. My liver disease was never truly diagnosed and labelled cryptogenic liver cirrhosis (or in other words cause unknown).

I don't think the true nature of why there is a relationship between the two is fully understood but as Penel said auto-immune disease's often come as more than one.

However my liver disease was not auto-immune disease related, but there is a definite correlation between a higher % of CD patients having liver disease than in the normal population.

I've since had a liver transplant, I'd be really interested if anyone else can contribute to this thread.

Thanks Joe, I have more than one autoimmune disease. I had my gallbladder our a few years ago, seems that was related. I don't eat a lot of fat so didn't expect any liver problems, although I had to stop taking Methotrexate because that affected my liver bloods. I do get pain in the right side but a scan came back as ok.

A quick Google does indicate that methotrexate can cause liver damage. If you were under observation for this then I'm sure you'd have stopped taking it before any permenant damage was done.

Do you have any other symptoms?

Hi Joe, I was diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis (I already had Psoriasis.), thus after some other drugs I was put on Methotrexate, which was monitored. It only took about three months for bloods to become elevated and so that was stopped. I am very sensitive to drugs. I was also diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and had my gallbladder out all roughly at the same time. I had a liver scan a couple of years later which showed some fatty liver but nothing more. I pain I get is on the left around the bottom of the ribs, I thought at first, it was fat related but it could be carbs. I do seem sensitive to most grains. I went g/f because I knew bread gave me digestive problems and I was very bloated. My G.P. didn't do a blood test at the time. Still getting some pain most days but don't think it can be anything major. xx

Fatty liver can be reversed through diet as I'm sure you were told. Also fatty liver is not fibrosis, which would be the next stage and can still be reversed. Not to be confused with cirrhosis which can't.

Good news is that the pain you get on your left side is not your liver as that would be on your right side.

The liver can bounce back!

Hi Jo, sorry my mistake, pain is on the left but I am doing all I can diet wise to reverse the fatty liver and not taking any drugs bar T3 for thyroid.
