If I look at the ingredients on the net for marmite its says nothing about wheat, barley, malt, yet I was told we could not eat this, so can we or can't we is it just an extract in there ???

The yeast in marmite is Brewers yeast therefore not gluten free. Have bought something called natex which is gluten free and tastes the same.
Maybe it's something to do with the way it's processed, because I'm very sensitive to cross contamination, and vinegar, but I can eat Marmite without any problems.
No. If you want to be gf dont eat marmite. We were niave to it containing gluten til recebtly and couldnt work out why my son was still bad. Much better now he's stopped eating it.
But dont worry there are other yeast extracts you can eat. Meridian do one and another brand too but cant remember the name.
Hi Jill, as rightly stated Marmite is made with spent brewers yeast and the Bass brewery pay marmite to take the sludge away so there will be malt present.
Also the labelling laws in the EU mean that wheat derivatives do not have to be labelled as such so Marmite which's a 'secret' recipe has plant extract listed, in NZ where they make Marmite under licence and have to label wheat derivatives it lists wheat germ extract.
I used to get mouth ulcers if I ate Marmite so I checked it out and then asked CUK why they did not denote it as containing malt and they replied that they did not bother labelling foods that were at the lower end of codex (we had 200ppm as gf then)
Marmite tests at around 30ppm according to Celiac.com so it does contain gluten.
Under the old regulations of 200ppm "Marmite" was acceptable but when this level was adjusted to 20ppm Marmite no longer fell into the GF category (the manufacturers published their product at 60ppm). It is down to your own tolerances and decision as to whether you consume it - some people (like myself) do not have extreme reactions to consuming gluten BUT regardless the damage is still being done even if one doesn't exhibit any of the usual "glutened" symptoms.
I believe that Tesco Yeast Extract is approved by Coeliac UK but don't quote me on that, do your own checks too.

I found I could eat Marmite and it didn't affect me, so I might be lucky. I tried making my own Marmite using the yeast that comes with the GF flour, simmering it in water with salt until it thickened into a brown gloop. It had a marmity taste. Marmite contains vegetable extract and other ingredients. I reckon you could make your own gluten free version quite easily if you have the yeast from the GF flour. I assume that yeast isn't from a brewery.
I've been eating Meridian's yeast extract which is gluten free. I'm an avid Marmite fan and I cannot taste the difference. Recommend it rather than taking the risk. Yum.
