So I wanted to make lentil soup as I have never made it before..All of the packets of lentils at the supermarket say may contain gluten or handled in a factory which also handle gluten..

What is the risk here..?

So I just called Coeliac UK helpline and they say as long as I wash them thoroughly they'll be fine, apparently they get this query all the time..:)

Hi weee, this has come up a couple of times before and according to the reply in the first link lentils are often grown in crop rotation with wheat and lentils and wheat grain is a similar size, so it may not just be handled on a line that handles wheat. I agree about washing them very thoroughly and would hope that most people wash any grain/bean before cooking. so as this has come up before, please do let us know how you get on.

Hi wee,

I eat lentils regularly. Pick your brand carefully and you should be fine.

Not all brands are handled on the same line as wheat, so you might just need to shop around the various supermarkets a little harder. Asian stores can also be a useful source.

I personally don't touch any packs that say 'may contain gluten' or handled on a line where gluten is processed.

Do wash thoroughly before use to get any dust off - like you would do when using rice or quinoa.

Finally, be prepared for the after affects - farting is not unknown!

Thank you guys.. I did find the previous conversations...I'll see how I get on.. I've chosen an organic brand which seems quite good...RB, i'll be sure to warn the boyfriend....:P

I found red lentil at a Lidl had no warning on the label but I always washed them thoroughly. They do make a soup don't they Weee!

Hi

I guess you mean split red lentils. On one occasion I did find a whole grain (probably pearl barley). Now I spread them out on a tray and look for foreign bits. Then wash as others recommend.

This is handy advice for any dried pulses which may have been dried in the open in place of origin. As well as rogue seeds I often come across pieces of stone which play havoc with the teeth.

Thank you guys, I washed thoroughly and made delicious soup with chopped tomatoes and curly kale and was absolutely fine (apart from the mild symptoms mentioned by RB which I won't go in to here..Suffice to say the boyfriend was too polite to mention...) I'll be sure to check for rogue seeds in future Mrs P.
