I have just been diagnosed with diabetes and also have a gluten intolerance, when glutened I get very painful joints and muscles and also bloat a lot... I am just starting to get my head around my gluten intolerance and now this! Is this quite common? I feel like I'm getting hit from all directions at the mo ;0(

Far more common than you would think.

I was gob-smacked when I was diagnosed with the T2 in Sept 2008. I speak at Coeliac events nationwide...so did a show of hands in the room..and was surprised to find so many Coeliac/diabetics...

Yes it can be done. The usual "jacket" makes the sugars race.

Yes you will fall from grace...its normal...The help on here..has been simply wonderful...

Give me a shout if you need me...

type 1 diabetes and coeliac are common together as they're both autoimmune conditions. In Glasgow all Type 1's get screened for coeliac every 3 years. I was missed for some reasons and had had CD for a long time I think.

It gets easier - but if you have Type 2 I think it would probably be easier. I have Type 1 and use an insulin pump and find the GI of the GF foods is just too high so try to eat naturally GF foods like fruit and veg rather than processed foods. My digestion has speeded up dramatically since my gut has healed so that has given me a few control problems - but I guess I will work them out eventually.

It's Type 2 so I guess I have that to be thankful for....

Bad luck Janeyh

As Mmmm has said - watch out for the ready prepared gluten free food from supermarkets, it's loaded with sugar and lacking in fibre.

A lot of people on here seem to have more than one problem to deal with, unfortunately.

You're right Penel, a lot of us have multiple medical challenges. I don't have diabetes and probably never will, but I realize it's a huge problem to tackle. I have Fibromyalgia, Inflammatory Osteoarthritis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Hoshimotos Thyroiditis, Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease, Scoliosis, collapsing disks in my neck and lumbar region of the spine, Hypokalemia, and Asthma. No matter what your problem, avoid processed foods and eat as well as you can afford... you're worth it!

My goodness Liana, that's a lot to cope with. I do hope you are as ok as you can be! Definitely agree about avoiding processed food. We use a slow cooker a lot.

Yes, Penel, life is a challenge. Last fall I was fortunate enough to be able to participate in a 6 week course on pain self management. Afterward, I was invited to become a facilitator in the program. I completed my training and am currently leading two programs. I have 2 more scheduled for later this year. The one thing I learned is that even when everything seems out of reach, there is still room for hope. I now have many new skills and tools at my finger tips. Whether it's diet, exercise or pain management, there are always challenges to be met and solutions to be found. I choose a gluten free lifestyle... I'm not ON a diet. It's a matter of perception ....which often requires a shift in basic thinking.... and a bit of effort. Thank you for your concern. I have a rich life full of love and happiness because of the lessons learned from my many health issues.

I have D.H and shortly after I was diagnosed my type ! diabetic son saw our GP foe his checks and the doc told him not to be surprised if he became Coeliac as

A} there is a connection with Diabetes and CD

B} there is a lot of CD in the family and he is more susceptible as he has an auto immune disease

I don't know what advice you may have been given about your diet, but you may be interested in reading this.

Hi there. I have a wonky thyroid (nearly 1 year) and coeliacs (diagnosed in march). Our daughter was diagnosed with T1 diabetes aged 11 months and is now aged 4 and a half. She was also diagnosed with coeliacs at the beginning of june. Unfortunatly they are all linked auto-immune diseaes but when I asked K's diabetic nurse about the chances of me developing diabetes and K developing a thyroid problem she said it's rare that people have all three. I'm keeping an open mind though, lol. I know it will be hard for the mean time but keep your chin up. xxxxx
