Total gluten avoidance!.

That you 'avoid gluten as much as possible' is not a good plan. Studies have shown that if you 'cheat' or 'slip' even once a month - and not a pizza, but just a small amount, your risk of death increases 6-fold. I know that's a pretty heavy statement for 8 in the morning, sorry about that, but it's a very serious thing. In much the same way as you can not be a little pregnant, you cannot have a little gluten. Gluten sensitivity / CD is a permanent intolerance that requires total avoidance. Codex dropped the ppm from 200 to 20 in 2008, it's also 20 in the USA, but in Australia it's 3!

Think about this, your immune system is designed to react strongly to things that are microscopic - You've never seen a virus that gave you the flu, or a bacteria that gave you food poisoning, but both of those things made you pretty ill. You can have a very strong reaction to a very little gluten, without overt symptoms sometimes, but the inflammatory reaction that occurs in your body as a result can be seriously detrimental further down the line.

What's your take on this? What do you mean when you refer to the GF diet?

I have been watching a coeliac message board where they are obsessed with gluten and they will go to great lengths to protect it in their diet, and every sentence used has "GF" in it. Many non basic items of food is being stopped by PCT's in the UK as they can be bought off the shelf and currently may contain 200ppm of gluten and marked up as "Gluten Free", so far I have seen four petitions for doctors to prescribe low level gluten containing foods to coeliac's, which I think is counter productive.

Which message board is that? I'd love to have a look.

It certainly in counter productive. Where is the common sense in that?

I guess it's lucky that there's such a growing tide of awareness about CD, but the state of affairs as it is now is concerning.

My PCT which is doing the severest cuts are holding discussions on Friday so there might be a climb down and just stop the cakes and biscuits.

It does appear that the market for coeliac's is mainly based on those who can tolerate low amounts of gluten as there is very little on supermarket shelves that I can eat.

The message board is boardhost.com/glutenfree
