I had my test last week and although the person setting up my test was very kind the experience could have been much better. I am writing this for anyone else who is waiting to have this appointment. If you are worried or nervous check out where you can go and have a look first.
Specsavers was inside Sainsburys the machine was tucked in a corner but open to the public, it was very noisy. I failed the first test, because the lady told me there would be a demonstration first but failed to tell me it was part of the test.
You are allowed three attempts, I did expect the machine to be the same as the hospital but it was different, not a fixed red dot but a moving one.
I also had to see the optometrist for a sight test which was in a what I ca only describe as a cupboard probably why she wore a mask.
My test was successful subject to a DVLA decision.
Hope this helps somebody out there.

Plus one for this advice. I failed the test due to a similar situation, and had to appeal to get my licence back. My advice is to pay for a test at a Specsavers, about £30 to familiarise yourself and make sure you are happy with the conditions. Get a copy of the result and usually they will give you an "opinion" of the result.
yes, I had mine done a few weeks ago in a Specsavers inside Sainsbury’s. I don’t think the light was moving around . It was more like the Humphrey Fields test that I am used to, only I could use both eyes. I did it twice. Glasses on and glasses off. The assistant said he didn’t think a third time was necessary as results were consistent. So by that, I assumed I had done it fairly well. Then similarly I saw optician in a cupboard. She was also very positive and said my central vision was fine. That was over 3 or 4 weeks ago and I still haven’t heard anything from DVLA. Assuming it was ok , or they would have written straight away.? My appointment was 9 am so perhaps that is a good time as the shop was quiet. I think there is a choice of opticians on the DVLA letter and they do specify the type of machine used.
