A shunt or not?

has anyone had the experience of having a shunt put in their eye for glaucoma at the same time as a cataract operation?

I’ve had one very successful cataract operation and I’m about to have the second. The consultant wants to put in a shunt as the pressure in that eye is 22,

Have never had any treatment for glaucoma, and have read conflicting things about the success/ comfort et cetera of this operation

I’d love to hear from anyone who’s had it done

I had two put in one eye and one in the other during separate operations. Both went well and I really did not know anything about it as it was done alongside the cataract. The combination of both had brought my pressures down considerably.

thank you so much. you’re the only other person that I’ve heard of who’s had it done . The consultant is obviously very keen for me to have it, but I felt a bit rushed. He also wants me to be part of a study and I was a bit concerned he wanted me more for the study than anything else. I’m sure that’s not fair of me, but it’s so good to hear from someone who’s had the same operation. Thank you so much

Hi

I am waiting for the same operation and I have asked my consultant twice to explain the procedure as it sounds daunting. I have no choice but to try this as my pressures are not coming down and the eyesight in my left eye is deteriorating😩.. I’m thinking positively and hoping that this op will work.. I have been booked in for the end of March and can feedback to you unless you have you’res done before then

I don’t think I’ll get mine that quickly, so I wish you all the very best for yours. I will be very interested to hear how you get on. I’ve had a cataract operation before and that really wasn’t anywhere near as scary as I thought it was going to be and I’m assured this won’t be any worse. Looking forward to hearing you say it was a really good idea. !!

I will definitely let you know how it goes and as much as I didn’t want it done I literally have no choice now so onwards and upwards ..

Hi there, some ophthalmologists do like to suggest this as it can be a convenient way of doing things. For example, rather than you visiting on separate occasions for surgery, they can combine the two to take the stress off of you. It can be efficient for glaucoma patients who also have cataracts, this page is very helpful in explaining the reasons why - aao.org/eye-health/treatmen....

yes I think that’s the reason they want to do it for me because I’m having a cataract operation. It makes sense to do the two things at the same time I guess

Thank you

I've had an "istent" fitted in each eye within the last 12 months, is that the same as a "shunt" ? Resulted in reduced pressures in both eyes, I should have had them years ago. New eyeball lenses were a revelation.

I’m not sure if my reply went to you or if I deleted it because my cat was helping me type!

thank you for responding I’m so pleased the operation was successful for you

I think stent and shunt are interchangeable names for the same thing,

I feel much more reassured by the responses I’ve had

Hi, yes I had a preserflo stent in my left eye with a lens exchange op as well last August ,it has brought my pressures down,I have narrow angle closure glaucoma.i was very nervous about the op but it isn't half as bad as you think it's going to be,recovery time is fairly quick.good luck
