would you recommend having the shingles vaccination. I am 75 and have Glaucoma

in my left eye and have had a preserflo micro shunt operation. I know that Shingles

can affect vision.

Hello bearf1r,

Best to check with your GP surgery, but if you are unlikely to be allergic to the vaccine, you are fit on the day, and the right age to qualify, then it would be a good idea.

Shingles can be very uncomfortable and may even affect glaucoma as it can sometimes involve the eyes potentially causing raised pressure.

The vaccine can be given even if you have previously had shingles, but there may be a delay between the disease and the ideal time for the vaccine.

I was grateful to get the vaccine a few years ago from my surgery.

Best wishes

I was worried about side effects from Shingles vaccine. I have raised eye pressures. Went ahead and had it because Shingles itself can be terrible especially for older people. Vaccine was fine with no effects afterwards.

I am 77 never had chickenpox although when I was 10 my brother had chickenpoxn my son and granddaughters whom we minded had chicken pox I have never caught the desease.

I understand if you have never had the desease you cannot carry the virus to get shingles and should not need the vaccine, is this correct please? What are the risks of the shingles vaccination?

I think it is the case that you need to have had Chicken Pox. I don’t know the risks of the vaccine. I believe I had Chicken Pox when I was a child. I decided it was the best thing for me. I didn’t have any after effects. My husband had Shingles in his fifties and my daughter caught Chicken Pox when she was eighteen, both suffered with it. Perhaps someone can answer your question on here.

I have had the shingles vaccination with no problems. I also have a Presserflo shunt and also a trabulectomy in my other eye. I knew of a couple of people who had shingles which affected their face (they didn't have glaucoma) and I thought it wise to get protection from this. The vaccine didn't affect my eye pressures and I had no reaction from it.
