Having a little moan

Apologies for the negative spirit!

I’m so sick and tired of my sister always thinking she knows best for my glaucoma. She keeps telling me to change my lifestyle so that my glaucoma will stop. How will going to the gym every single day (i hate gyms) going to stop my glaucoma? I already think I eat healthy after a spell of being pre diabetic. I try and go for a walk whenever I can.

yes having a moan every now and then is good for the soul. Otherwise I think it’ll bubble up and explode

I have a sister so this scenario is very familiar to me and probably to many of us. 😉

You don’t mention if your glaucoma was linked to the pre-diabetes issue?

You could meet her halfway and take up yoga or something that’s exercise, but not in the gym.

Too much stress won’t help your diabetes. So you were right to have a rant, let off steam and let it go! 👍🏻

i’m no longer pre diabetic. My glaucoma is a mixture of it being inherited from my grandpa and me being very short sighted.

I already do a bit of pilates via youtube when I get enough time in the morning (if she’s running late for the train and i have to give her a lift to the station, I have no time for exercise before work).

Glaucoma is a very complex disease!

Relationships between sisters can be even more complex!! 😂

moan away chum . It’s a horrible thing to have and it’s not easy also being pre diabetic and juggling life . Sometimes it feels overwhelming .

You are managing a difficult health condition that so much other stuff influences and though people in our lives try to help sometimes it just feel like more pressure .

If it’s any consolation, my sister is exactly the same. No-one else can know what it’s like to have this horrible condition, let alone try to advise someone who has it! I no longer go to Pilates classes (despite my sister nagging me to). I just do the exercises which are suitable for me at home, making sure my head is not below my heart. Good luck and don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself! x

it’s her way of dealing with your illness.

It’s annoying or frustrating I know.

When advice from someone you love and would usually welcome or appreciate doesn’t land the right way it can end up leaving you feeling even more isolated and alone in your struggle as it’s affirmation that they don’t understand.

I had that with my battle with surgeries pain and subsequent loss of vision in one eye.

Stay strong and moan away !

Hi, Nobody on here cares if you have a moan 😊 we all struggle with this stressful illness at times. Sadly though all getting fit can do is improve your state of mind, it's not going to improve your Glaucoma. So you do whatever is comfortable for you, even though your sister obviously loves you and means well, it's your life.

I wonder if your sister has Glaucoma as well? It usually runs in families. Both myself and my brother have it but it affects us differently. Yes, your sister isn’t helping as stress can cause more harm than all the things she is suggesting. Having said that I think losing weight and having a healthier lifestyle has helped stabilise my eye pressures and for now stopped the deterioration in my optic nerves. I use meditation to alleviate my stress and anxiety. But we all have to find what works for us and if your glaucoma is stable at the moment you don’t need to worry. Just politely ask her to let you manage it in your own way.

As far as I’m aware my paternal grandfather has it and since lost his sight in both eyes. My sister hasn’t shown signs of glaucoma so fingers cross she doesn’t have it too

yes my maternal grandfather had it. Back in those days the treatment was as bad as the disease and he went blind after so many operations. Thankfully, there are now other ways to lower eye pressure. Fingers crossed for your sister.

Hello GirlWithTheBow,

If I can keep healthy as much as possible then I feel it will be easier to deal with the Glaucoma. Perhaps that is what your sister is trying to say .

Research shows that just regular brisk walking for 20 -30 minutes every other day may help lower I.O.P's and increase blood flow to the eyes.. I do a quick 10 minutes of exercise before breakfast and always feel better for it....but NEVER go to the gym, I do not have time !.

Various research advises against weight lifting, scuba diving, bungee jumping, certain Yoga positions and even playing wind instruments.

A Mediterranean type of diet seems to be best for general health and the anti oxidants in fruit and veg may especially help eyes. It is also delicious!

Perhaps some people think they have to change everything dramatically given a glaucoma diagnosis , but I feel that a sensible lifestyle could help prevent other diseases , at least you may feel you are making an effort, which may even prevent some worries. Hope I am not nagging but just want to say that this helps me.

Best wishes

Hi muddledme i go for a brisk walk most mornings. When I’m in the office i go out for walks at lunchtime. When there’s space and time in the i’ll do 10mins of pilates too. Foodwise I definitely think it’s healthy.

My sister always think she knows best even if she doesn’t. She dishes out lots of insensitive comments which never helps

Is there any point in explaining to her how you feel about her unwanted advice?

If only...

It's not the first time she's given unwanted advice and not the last time I've explained to her. She just doesn't remember.

I'm assuming she has an "Older and Wiser Complex". Or maybe a "I'm Never Wrong Complex". So how about imagining her naked when she goes off on one. Might help you laugh it all off. Best of luck, you are doing great!
