My family Glaucoma history

Reading some replies to Tiger31 post this is my family's glaucoma history

Great Gran-Gran-Mum-Me

When it was discovered that mum had glaucoma myself and my siblings went to be tested, I was found to have inherited glaucoma, my gran died in1983, just before my 21st birthday which is why I remember the year, prior to her loss, first consultant had gran, mum and me on his books.

My siblings, now aged 61 & 51 haven't inherited the glaucoma, neither have my 2 cousins on mum's side of the family

Should also say gran had a sister and she didn't develop it either

Hope this helps members who are concerned about family history of glaucoma

Hi Jennymary ,

Thank you for sharing your story with us. We know that there is at least a four-times higher risk of developing glaucoma if you have a close blood relative who has it. So it's really interesting to hear how some members of your family have been diagnosed whereas others haven't.

We are always here if you'd like support or just a natter on the phone. You will find lots of ways you can get in touch here: glaucoma.uk/care-support/ Thank you.

Hi hope you don’t mind me messaging do your children have glaucoma. How long have you had it how’s your sight. I was diagnosed in December last year they say it’s been caught early. I hope so

Hi Julie, I was born with glaucoma, so I've lived with it all my life, diagnosed in the late seventies when I was a teenager, I'm now 58, neither of my siblings or myself have children, my cousins on my mum's side have children, but I haven't heard if it's manifested itself with any of them. Sight wise, it's always been OK with glasses, used to drive with no problems, but I had cataract surgery in December 2015, due to complications, lost all vision in that eye, vision OK in other eye, but cataract there will never be done, so that vision will gradually decline, due to level of vision in my one good eye I'm registered blind, something I've always known could happen, hope this helps

Thankyou for you kind reply. I appreciate that so much. I’m sorry you have been dealing with this all your life. I’ve heard so many things from nice people some saying they are the only family member with glaucoma and some saying it’s been passed down a lot. It’s worrying. I just hope my boys will be fine . Thankyou again for messaging. Xx
