Hello everyone, I've got my DVLA sight test tomorrow, 26 Jan. Does anyone have recent experience of how long it is taking to hear back from DVLA?

Last year I got mine the day before my license expired, about 2 weeks … coincidentally I have my test today also - good luck!

last year mine took six months, my licence had expired by then. At least when it came it was from the date of issue not back to when I had my test. I think they have improved since then. Good luck with your test.

If your optician said your eyesight is fit to drive then you can without your licence under Section 88.

I waited from April to December last year for their decision. I rang and emailed them in December and then got the result within 2 weeks.

Thank you, worth knowing!

My decision took only 2 weeks and that was mid December .

When I initially reported my glaucoma to the dvla online it said I could continue to drive awaiting decision as long as my eye care team deemed me safe to drive.

Good luck with your test…if it’s the field tests then they are sooo much kinder than the eye clinic ones!

DVLA were running behind with all this but seem to be fairly up to date with it all. I spoke to someone the other day who received it within 3 days! That has never been heard of before that I am aware of. I agree that it will probably be a couple of weeks wait. Hope it has gone well for you today and for t55dy.

Thank you Helen! I took a practice test a couple of weeks ago at my opticians, once with glasses and once without. Unfortunately I was told it was a fail. I did the same at Specsavers today. They were very good. But, even more unfortunately it was even worse, with more missed points, and three or four extra point missed in the central area. Still, I'm quite enjoying using trains and buses!

I had DVLA Field Test at Specsavers the week before Christmas and the renewed Licence received first few days in January. I was happy with this as some of the letters received from DVLA previous were dated 3 weeks before I received them. Hope all is good for you.

Thank you! DVLA dating can be a bit confusing , I've found!

Sorry to hear that you had a worse result today. If it is a case of having your licence revoked it is making you safe. As you are getting on ok with the trains and buses, good for you! You obviously have the right kind of outlook about it all.

I took mine in late October last year. It was 2 weeks before my licence expired. My new licence arrived the day before my birthday, so less than 2 weeks. They had said that I could continue driving after the licence expired until a decision was made,

Dvla took an eternity to renew

As long as you meet the eye sight requirements and have applied (you can check on their website it will probably say pending you can still drive)

PLEASE be aware there are other sites that imitate the goverment DVlA and they claim to fastrack it. Dont use it cos it will cost £80 upwards and no quicker and helpline impossible)

Oh, I've never heard of checking the result online. Have you got any further information about how to do that, please?

Dear Customer,

Section 88 of the Road Traffic Act could allow you to drive while your application is with DVLA. More information here –

you cant get the result of your eye test online only from the optician but you can track the processing
