Hi guys,

I had a DVLA Visual Field Test a couple of days ago. I had do to this 3 times, is this because I had too many false Negatives and does that mean I have failed?

Also, how long does it take to get a decision from DVLA.

Thank you

Hi

When I did my field test for DVLA the optician told me they did the test three times and submitted the best result to DVLA. Not sure if that’s what happens usually but either way, I had three goes at it. This was three years ago and I got 3 year licence (which is unfortunately up for renewal again now). It took DVLA about 4 weeks to inform me of the outcome then.

Good luck.

they take the best one of the three, you should have been offered glasses on or off. The results will take a while. You might get s shorter licence. If over 70 it is three years anyway but last time mine was just for a year. I had only recently had op on eye.

False negatives occur when a patient fails to see a significantly brighter stimulus at a location than was previously seen. False negatives are usually the result of attention lapses or fatigue and are difficult to correct. The visual threshold is the intensity of stimulus seen 50% of the time at each location.

I was recalled three times for false positives.

In your case it could be that fatigue was affecting your performance. From this, it appears that you had seen the fainter images. Some say blinking helps. With so much at stake I wonder how many of us actually perform optimally.

Hi I am 82 and have had the DVLA test 5 times! Each time I have been allowed to get a copy of the results! So now I have 5 sets of my tests. It is NOT correct to say that the best will be sent to DVLA. It is not for Specsavers to decide!! All tests will be sent. 3 is standard, with and without glasses. Currently DVLA medical are taking between three and eight weeks to process results. Good luck. Jim

the standards needed to pass the test are explained on the DVLA web site. Specsavers are allowed to tell you what you achieved but NOT if the result was ok

I have been waiting 5 weeks so don’t expect a quick response from DVLA. Don’t worry about taking the test 3 times, probably just nerves. I was much more relaxed 2nd time around and smashed it in 1 take….hopefully successfully

Worst case scenario, IF I fail can I retake the test immediately or do I have to wait a certain period of time?

Thanks

You haven’t failed, it always used to take me 3 tries. But you may have to wait a month or 2 to get a response from DVLA. If this is the first test you may get a 3yr licence, or 1yr if you’re close to limit. Optician would have been worried if you’re borderline

Hi I agree completely with Oldie42. I've also done the test 5 times (unfortunately I'm on an annual recall) and always do the test 3 times. Normally twice with my varifocals and once with no glasses, however in my recent test I did the 3rd test with reading glasses. All test results are uploaded within minutes these days to DVLA (so I was told!)

My test was done 7 weeks ago and I'm still waiting.

Very best wishes, I'm sure you'll be OK.

I have now done this test 3 times. Each time I was given a 3 year licence. The last time was in January this year when I was 70 and I had 5 goes at it. Previously I've had 3 attempts. I was told that all attempts are sent to the DVLA.Good luck - it is extremely stressful!

I had three tests too in Nov 22 and I think the tests were borderline and was given 1year before I had to take another 3 tests Nov last year and did not get my results until Feb 24 a very long wait, unfortunately this was a failure and my license was revoked, good luck for a pass result

I always ask for a printout of results. Usually three with glasses and three without.

One of the most off putting things I found for false negs was the bleeping noises from the computer. Once they gave me noise cancelling headphones to wear I got 100%. And they should also give you a copy of the results IIUC

i was told i have failed my field vision test by a consultant eye specialist whilst checking my eyes. i did my own test and found i had passed. i did not inform the DVLA and carried on driving until i did my annual eye tests and informed the consultant her test was wrong.
