Electronic Toothbrush - MicroShunt

Hi all,

General random question time.

Can you use an electronic Toothbrush after having a microshunt inserted in the eye? I've just been to the hygienist and she wanted me to reschedule until I had spoken to my consultant. Appreciate that she would be using sonic waves, so is different but that got me wondering about my electric toothbrush that I have been using.

Thanks

Hi Jeff, I use an electric toothbrush no problems. Hope you are well. How’s your eye?

Hi Max, thanks for letting me know on the toothbrush, I never really thought about it until the hygienist asked if anything medical had changed. I have a follow up with my consultant in a few weeks so will add to the list of questions mainly as the dentist used sonic waves rather than just electronic.

My eye has been settling down the last few weeks, the blurriness has pretty much cleared. Eyesight is not as strong but this I believe is due to the trauma that it went through and also an implant can change your prescription. I am back to being able to drive and work.

How is everything with you? Is your next appointment this week?

Hi Jeff, so glad to hear that your blurred vision has improved! I’ve been back to A&E due to the fogginess in my eye. My pressure had gone up to 27. This time a different doctor at A&E said that the tube is pressing against the iris. I have an appointment with my consultant this Friday so will see what he says.

Hi Jeff,

I had a similar issue after having my microshunt inserted as I occasionally use a vibrating heat pad on my hip as I have fibromyalgia, and was concerned the vibrations might damage my eye immediately after surgery.

In the end I made the decision to stop using it for a few weeks while my eye recovered, but am now back to using it as normal with no ill effects.

Wishing you a speedy recovery🙂

Hello Jeffvader. I would suggest using a manual toothbrush, just in the early stages until you can check with your consultant.

Thank you Trish for the reply. I will switch to manual, I see my consultant in two weeks and will ask then. Will share my findings after that so people know what he has said

Hi all,

Saw my consultant today. She informed me that it is safe to use both an electric and Sonic toothbrush after my microshunt.l surgery.

Thought I'd share in case anybody was wondering or concerned.

Hope everyone is keeping well.
