Consultation without Opthalmoscope

Hi there, I am 35 years old and use eye drops for my eye pressure since I was in my early 20’s. I use Cosopt 1 time a day and the pressure with the non-contact method is 27/28.

I moved abroad a few years ago and switched eye doctor.

This doctor says that since the scans they performed (OCT, and if the cornea) was within normal limits, also when comparing with the ones of previous years, I should stop using cosopt for 1 month to see if I can do without all together.

I do not have a good feeling about the fact though that she never looks inside my eye with the Opthalmoscope and does not measure the pressure manually. Also during the previous consultation she asked if my mom has glaucoma and brought up that it is probable I will get it too, and seems to forget about it the next appointment.

Am I overreacting about this?

P.s. my eye doctor in my home country had originally put me on Cosopt twice a day.

Hello, You do not mention you have glaucoma, so I assume the Cosopt has been prescribed as a preventative measure.

If this is the case, it is not unusual for a consultant to ask someone to have an "eyedrops holiday" for a month to see if the eye pressure increases or stays the same. This also gives the drop time to leave the body, so that the next reading will be a true one.

If the eye pressure is the same, they may recommend stopping the drops altogether, but you will be monitored closely, so that if the eye pressure starts to creep up again, they would prescribe drops again or even offer laser.

Having a family history of glaucoma can increase the risk of developing glaucoma, but it doesnt always develop.

Your concerns are very valid. I would suggest contacting your consultant and discussing your concerns.

Why she was not taking the IOP and depended on gestation only beside that as far as I know the normal pressure should be between 10 to roughly 21 or so .Have you notice that your IOP is over and above the normal limits? Did you ask her about this and what was her reply.I think before committing your self to her advice you need aa second opinionGood luck

Thank you both for your answers ❤️ Yes the best thing I can do indeed is to discuss my doubts with my eye doctor when I see her.

IOP reading must be taken with a Goldman Tonometer.... (Puff air Tonometer is only a rough guide)...also gonioscopy (a diamond shaped lens which fits in front of the lens of the Tonometer which evaluates the angles in the eye .... your IOP is high and should be much below 22!!.... depending on what your original diagnosis was! Good wishes from Thailand... which country are you in?.. cause if you are in Thailand by any chance I can certainly recommend you my GS and my support Opthamologist here in my city!... Ps:after thought... are the satisfied that you are being consulted by a qualified Glaucoma Doctor?
