Hi there, new to this group. Started having blurred vision 12 months ago, after referral from opticians and lost results from eye clinic. Fast track to specialist who told me I need very rare and complex operation, been bounced around 3 local consultants. Today I received a copy of letter to my GP telling me I have glaucoma? To say I’m upset and angry is understatement as I’ve constantly asked about my diagnosis. To make matters worse I’ve lost sight in my other eye. I’m totally devastated at the blasé attitude of one of consultants when I’ve asked for second opinion at Moorfields

A diagnosis of glaucoma is always a shock to the system, so sorry this has happened to you, especially the lack of communication. I'm afraid my personal experience of ophthalmologists is that communication skills are sadly lacking. Having said that they all seem to be totally overworked. You are certainly entitled to a second opinion: asking your GP to make the referral might be the best way to achieve that. The diagnosis is unlikely to change however.
Do you have any idea when you will have surgery and what exactly it is? Have you been prescribed eye drops?
You might get some answers to your questions by emailing the consultant's secretary, addressing your email to the consultant themselves. This worked for me in the past.
Hi Winnie1967 I can totally empathise with how your feeling, it's always a huge shock when you first hear the word glaucoma but to find out the way you did is much worse. The fact you have already lost vision and been passed from pillar to post certainly doesn't help. I unfortunately agree there are some opthalmologists who are very much lacking in people skills .
Were you even told what the operation you require was ?
I agree with Stones93 I would contact the specialists secretary and try and get some clarity if you have an email address or a phone number . I personally phone my consultant's secretary and have always found her very helpful .
Good luck .

As the other members have mentioned. You need to get back to the eye secretary for clarification on one, what type of glaucoma you have (there are different types) and two, the type of surgery they are recommending.
Once you know the type of surgery, please call the helpline as we may be able to put you in contact with a buddy who has gone through the same procedure. Speaking to someone who has had the procedure can help.
