Hi, does anyone know if it’s ok to start on Thyroid medication if you have Normal Tension Glaucoma? Anyone have both conditions?

L-thyroxine, and it will be a starting dose, increasing over three months.

Thank you, 🙂

Hi, I have both conditions. I am 71, have been on levothyroxine for about 17 years, diagnosed with glaucoma 14 years ago. I have moved house 4 times in that period and so seen different doctors. None of them has mentioned any difficulties with meds. Hope this reassures, but please feel free to ask me questions! 🤗

Thank you! It does reassure me, and even though I’d looked it up, I know that glaucoma consultants don’t always go with what the general thinking is. But they’ll agree with each other, so I’m happy, thank you.I don’t suppose you also get migraine with aura do do? I’ve had this for years and years, but the ongoing effects of Covid19 from March 2020 have made it more frequent. I’ll take the thyroxine anyway, but would like any possible forewarning of more migraine on the way.

All the very best, and keep waffling 🙂.

When I was younger, I did suffer from migraines, intermittently and not for any particular reason that I could see. I couldn’t link them to any foods; the only thing that did definitely bring on a migraine was being exposed to flashing lights. My first ophthalmologist believed there was a link between being prone to migraine and developing glaucoma, but another consultant, who worked with him, disagreed completely! I honestly don’t think most ophthalmologists have been much concerned with causes before now, but I am hoping this may change (for the benefit of patients in the future) due to the more ethnically diverse population in this country nowadays. It does appear to me that black and Asian people are more likely to develop glaucoma and for it to appear earlier. Having had the experiences I have had, I would love to see a higher publicity profile for the disease, then (hopefully!) a cure may be found. As I say, too late for me, but the fewer people that have the difficulties I have had with trying different drops, hours spent waiting about at hospitals etc, the better.

Hello,

I also have both Glaucoma and Hypothyroidism.

A few years ago I was given Levothyroxin when I also had Glaucoma eye medication.

Unfortunately although I was only given a small dose of Thyroxine after two weeks I developed continuous headaches and had to discontinue this treatment.

I tried several different meds but most contained Magnesium Stearate as a filler, this always gives me problems.

I do have a lot of allergies and I think most people feel fine on Thyroxine.

Luckily at the moment the Thyroid level is borderline, so hopefully it will not be a problem again. It seems Thyroid levels are very labile.

The Health unlocked Thyroid website was extremely helpful.

You will probably feel so much better after a few weeks of medication...good luck !
