Hello everyone, I am 33 and have been diagnosed with pigment dispersion syndrome for a few years now. I was wondering are there any decongestants out there safe for people with raised eye pressures, because going through a blocked nose isn't pleasant at all without medicine (truth is I'm a bit of a baby!)
Decongestants: Hello everyone, I am 33 and have... - Glaucoma UK
Decongestants
When I have a blocked nose/sinus problems I use old fashion steam inhalation, but I don’t know a lot about pigment dispersion, but I personally would keep away from decongestants /nose spray, as I am sure these have contributed to my vision loss.
Do not use decongestants. I was told both by a pharmacist and a go that it was ok but my consultant says my subsequent loss of vision is due to it. Apparently only a minority will be affected but you don’t know if you are in that minority until your sight goes and it can go quickly. Just don’t. Use steam or salt water washes.
Hello! I have pigment dispersion as well with open angle glaucoma, and I have always been told by doctors that it is OK for me to take cold medicines. I’m told it is the narrow angle type of glaucoma that makes it very risky to take those medicines. I would double check with your pharmacist and let them know what type you have. Best of luck!
Hello Wherdyago,
As others have mentioned the concerns from using over the counter medication is aimed at people who have narrow angles. This is because any decongestant is a form of relaxant so causes the eye to dilate. When this happens the eye is pushed forward slightly and can make the narrow drainage channel even narrower. Always check with your consultant bnefore trying any new medication, whether over the counter or prescribed.
