Hi, I saw an earlier post on make-up and just want to ask a question. Is it safe to wear mascara after a cataract operation? Left eye Oct 20, Right eye June 21. If so, any type ie waterproof and if so, would remover be safe? Not worn make up for over two years now and would like to have a go again!

Many thanks

Hi Flowergirl24 I had both my cataract ops done nearly 2 years ago and I was told after 4 weeks it was safe to wear eye make up again. I did probably wait nearer the 8 weeks as I was pretty scared about it and especially taking it off. I was told to replace all my make up which I did and I do now wash brushes etc every week, I disinfect my make up bag and use antibacterial wipes on outside of mascara etc too. I throw the mascara away every 3 months.

I don't use waterproof mascara so mine is easier to remove, I use cotton wool pads and Liz Earle Eyebright to clean the make up off. I use separate pads for each eye and am very gentle. It is scary wearing eye make up again initially but I've been fine and so far have had no issues. There are lots of great hypo allergenic mascaras out there if your eyes are sensitive.

I don't wear make up everyday but I do like to when I'm meeting friends and just sometimes to cheer myself up.

Hope this helps x

Hi Witchie346

You have helped enormously. I have just been out shopping and have bought some Boots Hypo Allergenic Mascara, Intense Volume - may as well go for it!

I did try some false eye lashes on my belated first birthday celebration 2 weeks ago (1st year liver transplant) and to be honest, I felt like I looked like a drag Queen wearing them and they were so heavy.

I have the opportunity to once again go out tonight so I thought I’d give the real macoy a go. Like you, I don’t plan to use it everyday just now and then.

Thanks very much again

You certainly deserve to have a great night out, so enjoy yourself and I'm sure you will look gorgeous. One year birthday celebration after your transplant how amazing.

Hello. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t long after my op that I had some eye makeup up on. My eyes can now only tolerate a very natural mascara due to eye conditions and allergies. I used one from Green People Organic but have since switched to one from Inika which is fab! No red eye at all whilst wearing.

Thank you for your reply. I will look at the Inika one too. What would you recommend to remove the mascara?

Me personally, because apart from my ongoing eye conditions, my eyes have always been super sensitive so I have never found an eye makeup remover that doesn’t give me a pink eye 😂. I don’t wear mascara every day but when I do I use a warm flannel and remove as much as I can then I wipe them with Blephaclean wipes. I get them on prescription but you can buy from Boots too. They are a little pricey so you could always buy a bottle of the gel and use with a pad.

Not what you're looking for?
