Watering eyes following a trabeculectomy

Three months ago I had a trabeculectomy. I have normal tension glaucoma. Following the removal of a suture by laser, I have had weeks of discomfort, increased sensitivity to glare and a continual flow of tears from the eye that was operated on. I am told that the bleb has stretched and my consultant mentioned reoperating to put a couple of stitches in to stop it getting any bigger. Has anyone else experienced this? I have an appointment at the hospital next week and I am anxious to make sure the next steps are the best ones for me.

Hello Cath. Yes, this can sometimes occur but we would prefer that it doesn't happen to us. It doesn't mean that the operation has failed, just that it needs some fine tuning to get it back up and running efficiently. What has been suggested sounds like good advice and something which will hopefully solve the problem.

Hi again, following my trabeculectomy in Jan 20 I have had watering and stinging eyes, also really struggling to look at a computer even with a glare screen. Fluid from my bleb is travelling under the conjunctiva causing these problems. My consultant doesn't want to put any sutures in as may cause pressure to increase. I'm currently on eye drops brinzolamide for one month then to be reviewed in October. The drops haven't really worked yet. The consultant said it may take 2 YEARS for my eye to settle down, in the meantime I am off sick. I am interested to see what advice you are given. I had my other eye done in Aug 2019 and not had any problems

Hi Cath67, I had my first trabeculectomy in February (left eye) and my second one in June (right eye) and all was well, pressure back to 9 and 10, but the past month or so my left eye has been watering a lot, and I have a dull, pressure-like pain on the inside corner whenever I wipe or touch it. My doctor says everything looks fine, she said the pain is from some scar tissue that has formed from the trabeculectomy, and said to keep using the artificial tears and gave me a an eye drop for it (Ketorolac Tromethamine) which hasn't really worked yet. I have not been told to have another surgery like you were advised to do, but I do have that watery eye thing, like you do. And Bessieboo I hope it won't take 2 years for this watery thing to go away, it's really annoying! I was surprised that after 7 months this would start happening, my right eye seems fine after the June trabeculecomy, except for mild watering. I hope whatever you do solves the problem for you!
