I am interested to know about hair dye. I take Voriconazole for my Aspergillus. My hair seems to be coming out. I have very fine hair, and my Dr has mentioned Alopecia, it's mostly on the top of my head. I do have my hair coloured. Thankyou.

I had a suspected stroke (or seizure ) because of hair dye .I was under nuerologist for 20 years with a muscle weakness and at first was diagnosed with migraine which have always maintained I didnt have but now i get shaky legs in morning which I realised was after I had touched roots up so I looked on allergy uk and the advice was to put a little dye on inside of arm in elbow .I did this and it just disappeared thru skin with nothing happening on that night .36 hrs later I was sat outside on bench and a neighbour came to talk to me and I couldnt talk to her . I knew what I wanted to say but the words would not come out .I was ok otherwise and my neighbour gave me a couple of cups of tea and timed it to 45 minutes , when I was able to talk . On the following morning I had got up and found I had lost the use of my left arm and leg and was falling all over. Its taken nearly a year to grow my hair out and just as long for the shakiness to get easier .I looked on internet for things to get the toxicity out of my blood and brain .The nurse at the doctors didnt help she said it was impossible to get in brain but I maintained that skin breathes otherwise how would a patch on your arm stop pain or stop u being pregnant and I worked out by thinking back when I died my hair at odd times and how the symptoms started .it was every few months and kept thinking Id better go to docs abt it .It took me 2 years to eventually go to the doctors about it and still no joy . the doctor told me not to drive as could be getting TIA ,s till i had seen nuerologist well by the time i got to nuerologist the symptoms had disappeared( 1 year) probably because I could not afford to dye hair on 50pd a week sick pay . Any way amm still struggling along with this alone .

Hair loss is a common symptom for most people who take voriconazole. It is reversible - sometimes via managing your dose better or moving on to a different antifungal drug ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/248...

Hair dye use has been weakly linked with some cancers over the years cancer.gov/about-cancer/cau... but modern dyes are not thought to be a risk cancerwa.asn.au/resources/c...

Can they cause other health problems? Yes it can - allergy is known for permanent dyes (and medical advice is not to use permanent dyes if you are allergic) ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/272... and the whole process of hair dying is of course pretty rough on your hair!

Contact dermatitis ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/270...

Good overall review ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/268...
