how do you decide if you need a walking aid
Please contact your GP, and ask for a referral to the Occupational Therapist, and they will come to see you in your own home and do an assessment. If they can see how you are affected, they will be able to gauge what your best options are for aids, and other ways to make your life more manageable. Please pick up the phone and give your GP a call. Good Luck.
Hi Sparksmark,
I agree with Tearsofaclown. I went to see my gp as I was using a walking stick that my father-in law had at home. It was helping me but it wasn't a proper aid. My GP referred me to Occupational Health and they were great. They helped me so much. I now use crutches which help me stand and walk (what steps I can) a bit better, I used to link arms with my husband when I did walk and it didn't help my back either. I have many aids at the house and can only walk a few steps anyway. Don't be embarrassed. I was at first, but I now see my aids as something that can help me to live my life the way I need to live it now. Things have changed for me, and I also look at the aids as pain relief. It is something you need to help you gain some confidence back. I've had falls myself. Let me know how you get on or if you have any problems. I'm sure your GP will be able to help you.
