FND symptoms and illness or injury

How does things like colds, flu, stomach bugs, viruses, UTI urinary tract infection, respiratory tract infection etc effect FND symptoms?

Do they increase severity of current symptoms ?

Do they cause past symptoms to reoccur?

Do they cause new symptoms?

Do symptoms regress completely or improve when recovered from the cold, flu, UTI etc ?

How does physical injuries such as a sprained ankle or a broken bone for example impact FND symptoms?

Do FND symptoms become less or more intense if you have a physical injury?

In my case, anything extra taxes me. When I do too much physically, I am slammed by more aggressive symptoms. I suppose that extra strain on your system from illness or injury could trigger similar reaction. A fellow group member just mentioned to me that stress and medicine changes can be a catalyst.

Hi simple answer, if it is a nerve trauma type issue like a physical injury, then yes symptoms are likely to get worse during the healing period of that specific injury itself - then back to level where you were previously.

If it is more general like a virus, infection, flu etc then less likely to make FND worse, more fatigue is possible, but should not be more than a non-FND person would experience.

I have had 14 yrs of Motor FND and done Neuro Rehab, I asked the question whether I should get the annual Flu Jab and was told - not needed for FND, only if other medical conditions.

That said, having read about people getting Covid-19 that would be likely to affect the function of the brain and I would expect FND sufferers to find that a huge worry to make FND symptoms worse if infected.

Remember everyone is different (with or without FND) so what works for one, may not work for another, though best advice:

- always stick to medium level of activity where you can

- keep your meals to routine timing where you can

- keep well hydrated during the day

- try not to have too severe temperature shifts

(some like me find big weather barometric pressure shifts to affect function/coordination & pain levels temporarily)

Oh and build in some downtime relaxation or hobby for mental wellbeing.

Look for the calm in the Storm!
