FND and Dreams

Greetings... I had a question and I’m curious if anyone else has experienced the same dream problems that I do. For example, sometimes in my dreams the emotional reaction is strong enough to trigger a form or tremor or symptom that wakes me up. I won’t necessarily wake up because of that dream, but I’ll wake up in response to an emotional reaction I had in the dream. This does not happen to me often but it’s occurred every few months you can say ever since I have been diagnosed.

Here are some examples of some situations I have experienced:

One time I was extremely stressed out from this things I had to do in the dream that my head began to tremor and I woke up because of the tremor.

I was playing badminton in another dream and my arm swung in full motion to hit the bird.

I had dream last night that required me to open my eyes and I did.

Now, dreams prior to my condition were definitely different for me. The typically falling scenario (like stairs or a cliff) would have my leg twitch slightly in sleep. But now, especially with the condition, that same dream would cause a strong reaction. My leg would thrust in a larger motion than a simple jerk of which I used to experience.

So my question is if anyone else also has an exaggeration of movement in their dreams because of their FND? If no, does anyone have an idea, thought or consideration they would like to share? Frankly speaking I don’t like these dreams. I wake up quite flustered with those strong reactions because they feel stronger than I would have in my real life. And I’d rather not have them because I also notice they induce my symptoms the next day, and I feel “trigger ready” (like highly sensitive to anything that I could cause a tremor).

If you have no idea, that’s okay, but please feel free to share on thoughts you have on the matter. I just want to understand the association dreams have with the condition. All the opinions will definitely allow me to think more critically on the matter and hopefully form some kind of resolution or understanding that I can accept.

Hi Shali,

My wife's symptoms can be affected whilst she is in a deep sleep and dreaming.

I can feel her legs or arms tremor.

They say dreams are so real, so I'm assuming that the strong emotions you experience, are enough to trigger the symptoms, because I always believe one's physical well being is strongly affected by one's mental state and vice versa.

My wife's legs can kick out, which wakes me up!

So your not alone trust me.

I have jerks before falling asleep. Sometimes when I daydream before I fall asleep about using my arm, my arm sometimes actually responds with a jerk. I also have vivid dreams where I think I’m actually awake. I also have had sleep paralysis where I know I’m aware that I’m sleeping and I wake up for real but I can’t move except to open my eyes slightly. And this, which is TMI, but that’s what we are here for, but I have had orgasms in my sleep and it would wake me up. It was funny at first but it happened a few more times and I wanted it to stop, thankfully it’s been three months since it happened. But I dream too much, very complex, so many things going on, why doesn’t my brain relax when I sleep? The point of sleeping is to rest your brain but it is so active when I sleep I don’t catch a break.

Hi, sleep seems to be one of the first symptoms, well lack of it or sleep of poor quality. The brain would normally switch off the connection between dreams and your physical movements leaving the autonomic system to continue with heart and breathing etc.

You would probably need to have a sleep study done, it can be done at home with kit which will measure your brainwaves, oxygen level and pulse. Fited at hospital and you come back next morning to have it removed. This would establish if you have a REM sleep disorder or similar condition.

I can no longer sleep with my wife due to sometimes violent movements and hitting out etc.

Hope this helps. This can be treated, also a good bedtime routine is very impotant, especially winding down an hour or two before going to bed.

Yes there is a connection!! I have repeated dreams over and over everynite. Usually 3 per nite and all have common denominator's. They are very complex with friends and family involved. I do not remember the last time I had no dreams in the past 6 plus years. In Fact this is now part of the presentations I do on FND. FriggingNeuro Disorder is the most hanus of the neuro next to ALS. inmy opinion it is because of the deepbrain and how the hypersensitivity we have in our 6th and 7th senses. We can understand and comprehend faster then most people, even though our bodies are shutting down.

Please elaborate on your response about your presentations on FND and the connection to the 6th and 7th senses. It sounds very interesting and would love to hear more.😀

Yes I can, the 6th and 7th senses are from being mindful of my surroundings. This level is accomplished through meditation with your 3 major worlds. Physical , spiritual and environmental awareness. Re Depaak Chopra. The more overlapping of these 3 worlds create an awareness that's amazing. It can be overwhelming at first but wow does it explain and get you thru tough times. Its kind of a flow state for meditation. When you can find the flow state in your everyday activities, routines and automaticity are helpful in getting through the process of life. You will be able to read people before they can read themselves. It will help you keep positive light on what is going on in your worlds.

I SYMPATHISE THAT YOU ARE REALLY GOING THROUGH A BAD TIME WITH YOUR DREAMS, BUT CAN SYMPATHISE AS MINE ARE THE SAME,

I DREAM LOADS BUT ALWAYS OF THE SAME PLACE, A ROAD AND MOTEL OR HOTEL AND SHOPS ETC, I DONT RECOGNISE THEM. EACH TIME I DONT GET TREMORS BUT WAKE UP SHAKING AND SCREAMING. IT HAS GOT ME THINKING, AND I WANT TO KNOW WHERE THIS PLACE IS AS I AM SURE IT EXISTS, I SCREAMED OVER TIME SO MUCH THAT MY POOR HUBBIE IS FRIGHTENED TO WAKE ME.

Hello, Shali! I hope you're already recovered, and if you're not, I hope you recover. What you're telling us is really interesting, though. Evr since I learned about FND I've wondered if there's a link between dreams and FND, because I'm psychoanalytically-oriented. Did you mean that your "dream-self" was having a tremor inside a dream, and you woke up to find that your real body was having real tremors?
