I had a pretty bad stomach virus 3 weeks prior to the onset of my first FND attack. I am curious if this can lead to this disorder?

Can post viral infection cause the onset of FND?

Dear acalandra995
I found your post most interesting 3 months before I had a major collapse and then started to go really downhill for me I had suffered two chest infections and a belt of shingles then off to sleep three months later the neurologist start kicking in and then I get the fnd diagnosis.
sorry me again i hate voice typing on my phone always send a message before I finished how rude have they checked your vitamin B12 and vitamin d levels it seems these are connected with fnd in some strange way and I do believe that if your levels are low it will alter your immune system which would cause you to get any viral infection I can't quite figure out the connection but it does seem to be there a lot of people suffer with this and fnd so I found your post most interesting I really hope that you improve soon and I wish you well

For me, this was the case. My B12 got low and suddenly I had these FND like symptoms. They are getting better, with PT, OT, and B12 injections. This all started in May, and left me mostly bed bound. I could kinda walk if I dragged myself. And my hands and neck shook all the time and I was in pain 24x7. Now I can walk ok most days. If I go out I need a cane for support. I still can't drive for the most part, but I am able to work from home, and manage most days. I hope this will eventually just go away but I've accepted that it may not.
Hi,
Yes, unfortunately infection is often seen before or at onset. Usually there are other factors too. Mine started with an asthma attack and subsequent allergic reaction to inhalers, but I'd had two lots of antibiotics in the weeks leading up to it for cellulitis from cat bites (I had a very ancient, very cranky cat who I'm sure was trying to take me with him when he was dying). I was also B12, B6 and vitamin D deficient.
I sometimes think that it was a wonder that I wasn't ill sooner. It was like a bad alignment of the stars. I'd had what I've recognise as bouts of FND with asthma attacks in the past (I only have very occasional, but very dramatic allergic asthma), but it always settled down quickly in a matter of weeks. This time it's got a grip. Probably due to vitamin deficiencies. I'd already developed nerve damage from the B12 deficiency, but my GP lied to me and said my levels were normal :-|. It was only due to getting a copy of my notes for my PIP tribunal that I saw that they were actually low and had dropped from levels take just a year before.
It can be a case that you also have other things underlying too. I certainly would ask for the actual levels of B12 an D rather than accepting "normal" as we tend to need a higher level of them to recover. I also take mine in sublingual form as I have gastritis.
I hope you find your way to recovery. You may have to attack it from all sides though. Good luck. xx
