Just joined here on HealthUnlock. So glad I found out about you here! How are all of you? I am Larissa ... I have been officially diagnosed with FND/FMD almost a year and a half ago...though the FND looks more ancient than that!

Here is my story! youtube.com/watch?v=qvosjgo...

Hi Larissa,

Thank you for sharing your unique experiences on this site.

I would like to ask, I saw you looking at a website and would be interested to know where you got the terms related to FND/FMD- PTSD and idiopathic?

I am an actual researcher on PTSD and can assure you it is not idiopathic, it is a mental health disorder mentioned in the DSM-V.

PTSD occurs after being involved in or witnessing a traumatic event. This can include but is not limited to, natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, or car crashes, assaults either physical or sexual assaults, bullying, being a miltary person in combat or a displaced person living in a combat zone, living in refugee camps, losing family members through any of the above, witnessing or being involved in terrorism, kidnapping, working in emergency services or threats where you believe there is a serious risk of loss of life to either yourself or a loved one.

The symptoms generally begin 4 weeks after the event and should be treated by a psychologist/psychiatrist before 3 months. People with PTSD may never recover but may be able to manage it so that they can go back to a more functioning life.

It does not manifest in physical symptoms. Symptoms include, nightmares, reliving the event, having triggers such as a noise that reminds you of a bomb going off or a mountain collapsing on top of you and will be so severe that the individual will run for cover. Many people with PTSD hibernate. They do not want to leave their home as being outside there are many things such as a sound or a colour or a voice that can trigger not only fear but reliving the whole original event over and over again. Many people with PTSD go to bed and dream of the event - having nightmares then get up and spend all day either reliving the event in their head, where they feel they are actually back going through it again, or having a trigger that sets of the event again. They have hyper vigilance to every sense. It can be a mentally crippling disorder and is shown by many returning military personnel who have witnessed horrific scenes during war and cannot cope with returning home and settling back into regular life, work and social events.

Even those who have been successfully treated and go back to work may live with PTSD for the rest of their lives. Studies show that 25% of police and firefighters who worked 9/11 and are working today still have PTSD.

I'm assuming that you are maybe reading that someone with PTSD might have FND or that someone with FND may develop PTSD but the two are unrelated. While anxiety is a word that is used in certain FND websites and PTSD symptoms include anxiety, the two are different mental health isssues and there is no link between PTSD neither is it idiopathic or related to FND/FMD

Hi there! I want to clear up that I never intended to speak of PTSD as idiopathic. I was referring to FND/FMD. I do not believe I have PTSD. It was what one of the local neuro opthamaologist/conversion disorder specialists had said very early on.

Another of my neurologists is who talked about the unkown causes amd origions of FND vs conversion disorder. He spoke of many many patients who do not appear to have any mental health connections to their FND FMD.

I know virtually nothing about PTSD and only intended to mentioned it as a part of an early diagnosis testimony.

In the description section of my video I link the sources for my Web references as well as remind that I am in no way an expert.

Cheers.

Larissa

Hi Larissa,

Thanks for clearing that up. There are so many health professionals out there who don't know much about this disorder that I hate to see wrong information being given to someone especially as we are all getting pieces of the puzzle and have different symptoms, experiences etc.

Look forward to hearing more from you. This is a great group

When I have time I will pin a comment under the video clarifying that as well. Feel free to comment on the video to clear ithe up too. Great job on advocacy of accurate information!

Your video was great and it's good to hear that you can still function in some ways such as home schooling your child as that must take a lot of brain power. My brain is thinking what will I put in the oven for dinner tonight? Then melts 😊

Welcome, 😀. You will find so much support on here looking forward to your input 😃

Hi Larissa, welcome to the lovely website, for me this is a godsend as am so isolated and lonely, it's great to know there is someone out there who understands what I'm going through and how I feel. Would write more but have an awful cold. If you can follow what I've put on here before you'll see I had sciatica, that then went up my left shoulder into my neck, once the chiropractor straightened my neck I left his practice in an ambulance. Enjoyed your video. Best wishes. Lisa-anne
