New study [1].
It's well-known that men with PCa have a higher risk for cardiovascular disease. Even before ADT.
Mark Moyad coined the phrase "heart-healthy is prostate healthy" and I think he is correct.
The American "food pyramid" is a disaster imo, with grains at the bottom & fats at the top.
The PREDIMED intervention study has shown that the 40% fat Mediterranean diet can reduce CVD events.
“In recent years, major new dietary recommendations have been revised to drop upper limits on total fat or dietary cholesterol, and a greater focus has been placed on protective foods"
"It is noteworthy that when we included red meat in the diet score in a sensitivity analysis, the findings were similar (neither stronger nor weaker) .., in keeping with our finding of a neutral association between red meat and CVD and providing evidence that unprocessed red meats are not a priority target for health"
"... including a moderate amount of whole grains is optional for a healthy diet."
"Consumption of a diet comprised of higher amounts of fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and a moderate amount of fish and whole-fat dairy is associated with a lower risk of CVD and mortality in all world regions ..."
Dairy, though, has generally been associated with more aggressive PCa. One theory is that the calcium in milk can drive total calcium intake to a level that inhibits hormonal vitamin D creation (cacitriol from calcidiol). Another is that it is the IGF-I (insulin-like growth factor 1), which tends to be elevated in PCa. PCa inhibits production of the protective IGF binding proteins - particularly IGFBP-3, resulting in higher levels of free IGF-I Etc, etc.
Note that some of the protective food amounts were quite modest. Weekly servings:
2-3 servings of fruits
2-3 servings of vegetables
3-4 servings of legumes
7 servings of nuts
2-3 servings of fish
14 servings of dairy products (mainly whole-fat, excluding butter or whipped cream) !!!
