Cystoscopy

I had a small amount of blood in my urine which turned out not to be a UTI. The doctor has sent me for a cystoscopy at the hospital on Monday. I have read about it and am becoming increasing anxious about it. Has anyone else had one who could give me any advice/encouragement?

Baz . . . I've had one as part of my "urodynamic evaluation" - used to evaluate my level of incontinence, prior to surgery for the AUS urinary control device implant. The use of local topical anesthesia did the job for the insertion of the optical camera, and I watched the procedure on the small-screen color display right next to the chair. I don't remember anything in the least bit painful about the procedure and actually liked getting to see the inside of the urethra and bladder post-RALP.

Also, I have relative who is being watched for bladder cancer and he gets them at least once-a-year. He doesn't look forward to them, as none of ever did with the digit exam of the prostate (back when I had one). I was there for his last appointment, and he didn't mention anything except that he got a clean report.

Anticipation of such procedures is usually the worst part. Do some deep breathing to calm yourself and ask to watch the action yourself.

I too had blood in the urine. My URO said it was because of bladder changes due to chemo and radiation. Plus I had a severe spinal compression fracture and was taking a lot of NSAIDs which do some kidney damage as well. Blood was for one day and shown, at Urgent Care, not to be an infection. My URO then sent me for a couple more tests (no bladder cancer, no lasting damage) which included a scope. They do a lot of these at Mayo, so they're good at them, and you get to watch on the screen; but I don't want to get one next week; I survived. It was more uncomfortable than painful. I talked to a guy in the waiting room who gets one every six months (because he has some kind of robotic sphincter to keep his pee inside) and he says they're so routine for him he doesn't care. Therefore my discomfort was probably more of a panic reaction. I still don't want to get one next week. Good luck.
