Am I being too paranoid?

Hubby diagnosed Sept 2023 with PV & Jak2. He's taking 500 mg Hydroxyurea daily & after a few adjustments doing & feeling really well. He isn't a worrier..I am which is why I'm asking this question: Prior to diagnosis went abroad (Europe) 2/3 times a yr,now thinking about going again, but,I'm worried as I know Hydroxyurea & the sun are not a good combination. I've told hubby,he needs to regularly use factor 50 *which he has @ home due to the 🌞 lately. I've told him he'll also need to wear a hat, which isnot going down well as he never has (he's got hair so thinks he's OK!!) I feel awful keep going on @ him, Has anyone taking this med ended up with skin cancer? Also, neither of us drink much, but on hols tend to have a few extra so also worried, that this may interact with Hydroxyurea. As I said, I am a worrier 😟 !!

You are not just being paranoid. He should wear a hat if out in the sun for very long. Preferably something with a wide rim and.or a neck flap. Try to find something stylish and cooling. I have quite an assortment for my own use.

Moderate consumption of alcohol is OK when on HU. Both are hard on the liver so important to not overdo it.

All the best.

Thanks Hunter, exactly what I thought. I think he'd rather behave, than have me going on......& on @ him😳. Neither of us ever drink much, so hope his liver remains ok. Hope you're keeping well🤞

Ive had Et and been on hydroxy for quite sometime now and my view is this: balance. Everyone regarless should take some precautions against the sun. Not sure where you are but here in Australia skin cancer is common. However, i dont want to miss out on good things (like being in the sun) of feel overly burdened wearing sun protection gear when im going for a walk. Here we commonly get skin cancers on the nose and shoulders. I wear a shirt and never go topless like a lot of Aussies do. If its over 35⁰ ill wear a wide brim hat for face protection. I rarely use suncream at any other time than summer. I have some sun damage on my arms and neck and im fine with that. No point in having a long life if one is not enjoying it.

Im 50yo so older folks may have to exercise more caution than i do if they want to reduce skin cancer risk.

I cant tolerate alchohol anymore and dont drink it. so cant comment on that aspect.

Thanks a lot Bloodzero. We live in a part of England that gets lots of rain , which is why we enjoy our sunny hols.. We are very aware how damaging the sun can be (me more so) We are quite responsible & hubby has ,since taking Hydroxyurea, started using Factor 50 when we have these sunny days, tho he hasn't bought a hat ...yet...perhaps a bit more moaning may work! Hope you're keeping fit & happy
