If it makes your wife feel better great. The evidence for SBOT (short burst oxygen therapy) is that no discernible effect can be shown ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl... for COPD patients with severely damaged lungs.

The only clinically proven SBOT for a neurological condition are cluster headaches when 12 l/m for 15 mins

This is the only evidence-based use for short-burst oxygen therapy in patients who do not have hypoxaemia.

Hi Ian123

I have oxygen when I need it for my COPD but I have the double tube that goes up the nostrils and oxygenates the blood, it is really good! I do not have the full mask type oxygen as it does nothing to help me?

I also have a nebuliser with Astalin Salbutamol with a full mask (the blue mist solution) but they do not use that with oxygen anymore, it is pumped through the machine just using air. As I do not believe that it helps with either asthma or COPD?

Take care my friend, and I am going to have a read of the link that you put on, thanks!

Hi Ken

The choice between mask or nasal cannula is mainly convenience / comfort until high flow rates are needed. Having your own pulse oximeter is a good guide for how much oxygen is in the blood or how desaturated. Oxygen is used as a drug in this treatment so doctors take care with the use as they would any drug they prescribe. In COPD one danger is hypercapnia - these patients are known as retainers as they have a gas transfer difficulty with the lungs so that not only oxygen in but also carbon dioxide out ( CO2 ) is a problem that must be monitored by medical professionals.

Good point on keeping away from naked flames with oxygen, though the oxygen itself is not flammable it makes it easier for other materials to burn. In the well known fire triangle of fuel, oxygen and heat an increase in heat or oxygen will make fire more likely .

Hi MightyS

Yes, I have oxygen as I have COPD, and had this for years! There are draw backs as it is not always advisable. There are limits to what you can use and of course, they must be kept away from open flames etc due to their combustibility.

Usually the oxygen is delivered and the old canisters taken away etc, but if it helps your wife then there is nothing to lose in making inquires about her having oxygen all of the time to help with her sleep? The doctors will know whether or not it is okay for her?

I want to wish you all the best of luck.

All my hopes and dreams for you

Ken
