Does anyone understand Embryo gradings in UK?

Hi all,

How you are all doing well this morning and all those injections, pessaries, tablets, patches and whatever else we contend with before we even start our day have been ok for you!

I’m just looking for s bit of help. I think I’m right in saying embryo gradings are numbered and the smaller number the better the quality? However on other posts on here I’m seeing letters as well? What do the letters mean? Am I right in assuming A is best or is it AA best? Or do the letters mean something else?

I have been told a have a grade 1, a grade 2 and 3 grade 3’s (as of yesterday anyway🤞🏻) but they didn’t say any letters. If I have the grade 1 transferred are they likely to freeze all the rest or only grade 2?

Many thanks

😊

Morning! Sounds like a great set of embryos!

I don’t think you will get a definitive answer on here. Depends on what day embies they are and what your clinic does. Some go high to low, some go low to high. Some use letters, some don’t!

My clinic won’t grade day 3s they will only tell you how many cells they are and they often won’t share a grading on day 5 as it’s still so early, but they have 6 as best and 3 as worst!

One thing is how the cells are dividing (think that’s the number) so are they dividing at the rate they want and I think the letter is how regular the cells are and how fragmented they are I think but sure someone medically qualified will confirm!

Masses of luck x

When you get to day 5 for blastocyst gradings, the higher the number is best (ranging from 1-6), you will get a number and 2 letters and A's are the best. However not all clinics follow this grading system but this is my clinics way of doing things. Ive attached a good link so you can see some pics with an explanation of what the numbers and letters mean. However, try not to get too hung up on gradings.....clinics only freeze embryos that are good enough to survive the thaw and from there its anyones guess as to which ones will implant.....there a lot of luck involved!! Good luck.xx

Grading refers to the measurements used in 3 different areas of blastocyst development. They are a guide to probability of successful implantation not a guarantee. Lots of girls have successful pregnancies using lower grade embies sadly not all high grades are successful.
