Frozen Sperm - IVF or ICSI?

Hello, I have been through one round of IVF using donor sperm and although 13 eggs were collected, none fertilised. I was devastated. At egg collection I was told that it would be overkill to use ICSI but in hind site it makes sense that it was the wrong advise. Surely frozen sperm would not be as strong as fresh sperm. Do you think that ICSI should be recommended for all frozen sperm? Has anyone had success with conventional IVF and frozen sperm?

We used icsi for our sperm donor sperm, they didn’t really give us a choice about that. I don’t know if that result is unusually bad or typical for frozen sperm..... I’d be asking the clinic what their success rates are usually with that number of eggs and not using icsi because I’d be wondering about egg quality.

We got told that if we'd have to have ICSI as hubby has a low sperm count. However we had some frozen as a back up and they clinic said if they had to use my hubby's frozen sperm that they would be as good as fresh but the preference was to use fresh sperm so there must be something in it I would have thought. Have you had a review appointment with the clinic to gain their views on this, usually poor fertilisation rates is due to the sperm?! I think if possible you should push for ICSI next time!xx

Hi Rgcw. In view of your last cycle, I feel if it was my decision, I would go for ICSI, just in case the sperm might be a little slow. If they recommend IVF again, then you need to ask about transferring to ICSI if necessary. Hope all goes well. Diane

Thanks for your message Cinderella5, I did have a review and they immediately recommended ICSI next time. I was given the chance after EC but they said it would be overkill. They were not able to make comment on either egg quality or sperm quality which I thought strange.
