I had my gym weigh in-BMI 35. I have read that the NHS aim to give you an appointment within 18 weeks I think-we have worked out that I need to loose just over half a stone a month. Plus-I am 40 at the end of January! The doctor had to refer us now as she said there was a 'small window of opportunity.'

No pressure then! :-)

I don't mind the weight loss bit-that's good for my health anyway. But having read what I would potentially have to put my body through for a very small chance....it must put a huge strain on your relationship.

Anyway-best go running or something :-)

thanks xx

hi, me and my wife went for our first appointment and my wife was 40 BMI and the doctor refused us any treatment until she drops to atleast 31 BMI. He told us to come back when she meets the critea. She is 32 and im 38 so maybe we have some time. Good luck and hope it goes well.

well, after all that I have had my first consultant appointment today and because I am now 40 (January this year) I was told I cannot get funding. I was referred last October. I rang my doctors expressing concern that my appointment had not come through within the 18 weeks (and I was worried about getting funding as they don't do it in Bradford over 39) and I was told that 'it was fine because I had been referred before I was 40'. That's not the case-you actually need to start ivf treatment before you are 40. Now I am told the cost of private treatment is £2900 plus the drugs. It's a lot to pay considering the small chances of success-10%. I'm wondering whether it is worth it......and feeling a bit peeved with my doctors!

Write a letter of complaint to your CCG. You can find their details here:

infertilitynetworkuk.com/ni...

Also you can ask your GP to lodge an appeal to the CCG on your behalf, especially considering they believed you were ok with a referral before 40. Actually most require embryo transfer before your 40th birthday so your GP made a big mistake here.

Thanks for that. It was the secretary that told me this when I rang up querying why my appointment had not come through. To make matters worse-the consultant told me today that my appointment was so late because the surgery had not faxed the papers through. My BMI is still over 30, but I still think they need to revise what they say to people. I still went to my appointment thinking I'd get funding with a bit of weight loss. very upsetting.

I think you need to find put who is the Practice Manager GP and insist on an appointment with them. Then point out all of their mistakes and ask them to lodge an appeal with the CCG for funding, ASAP, and provide you with copies of all letters.
