Autistic toddler - disimpaction - tiny soft sticky poos - at my wits end!

Hi, I really need some advice please. We have been dealing with this for the last 2 years and have done multiple disimpactions but have never got anywhere. My little boy was doing loads of little sticky foul smelling poos throughout the day. We were advised this was old poo and to do disimpaction, which we did over the xmas holidays. We went to a maintenance dose of 1 sachet a day, this was still too much so we were advised to do 1 sachet every other day instead. After about a week of this, he is now back to doing the little sticky poos which are foul smelling again. Is it possible we didn't get everything out with the disimpaction? We carried on until it was just brown liquid, but reading some comments on here I'm wondering if we needed to wait until it was more watery/thinner consistency? Or maybe carry on for more days?

He is constantly doing 'accidents' at nursery and I just don't know how to get him to do a solid poo that isn't sticky. He is fully potty trained for wees but can't do a poo on the toilet even if he tried because it just ends up stuck around his bum. It's distressing for him and us. He has a decent diet, could probably drink some more fluids though. He eats loads of baked beans which we have been told is one of the best things he could have... We have tried cutting down dairy too but this hasn't made a difference.

Sometimes he will do a decent sized sticky poo, tends to be in his nappy in the morning when he first gets up. But straight after that its back to the tiny little pieces all day. Is it possible that he can still do a biggish poo daily but still be impacted?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Sounds like he’s almost certainly impacted still. How long did you do a disimpaction for? How many sachets a day did you do and for how long? What you’re describing sounds like classic overflow and he’s probably got a large lump (or several) stuck, causing the overflow.

Dear gem93x , do get in touch with our Helpline, eric.org.uk/helpline/ we are very happy to help you.

It's worth checking that you are mixing the laxatives correctly, and ensuring that your son drinks plenty; 8 cups of water based fluid per day.

It could be that one sachet isn't quite enough, could you try increasing the dose?

best wishes

ERIC
