My 12 yr old has had constipation for years. He has been on countless medications and it has just got worse and worse. We recently were referred to someone new and he underwent 3 days of kleen prep as very very impacted. The kleen prep worked and the bowel was emptied. The dr said that everything was fine and no lasting damage to the bowel. We have been charting poo frequency and everything seems to have settled down. He is having normal poos finally though still a few a day but I have noticed some smearing still. Is this normal after treatment and will it eventually go? He can feel when the poo is coming and probably averages 3 a day still but there is still a smear of poo in the underwear sometimes. He has been discharged as the dr was very pleased and it all seemed to have worked and now I’m terrified we are going backwards. He is taking 2.5 ml of pico with the aim of weaning off completely

My 14 year old has a similar history (although without Kleen prep so far), so I’m delighted to hear that this has worked as well as it has - gives me hope.
Are you sure the smearing isn’t due to not quite wiping properly? And does your son have any idea why it happens - or if not, when or in what circumstances? Maybe the urge to go is still a little late and his first warning is when a tiny bit comes out…
Well done with getting as far as you have and good luck on getting this last bit sorted.
