4 yr old with pee and poo problems

Hi everyone. I have a 4 year old son who wets and poos his pants. He potty trained really well and was completely dry and clean for the first few months but then slowly his pants started to get wetter and wetter and now it's also poo. He has told me he doesnt like doing a poo and I know he holds it in longer than he should but he also does take himself to the toilet. Could this still be constipation even though he can poo when he wants to? Also hes no where near dry at night. But it's the daytime wetting and pooing that has us at our wits end. Literally dont know what to do to help him.

Xxx

It sounds like he is withholding. encourage regular toilet sits after every meal and . you may need to give movicol to help soften the stools especially if he is becoming constipated which he will do if he continues to withhold.

Thank you for your reply 🙂. I'm going to try him on laxido and see how we get on. Xx

Hi, this sounds exactly like my son now. It's so frustrating and I'm left wondering what I've done wrong!! I wondered if anything worked for you and if things have improved a year on? Thank you

Hi! I'm so sorry your going through such a hard time. You are not alone and things will get better I promise. My boy is now 5.5 yrs old and finally cured. It was a loooong long process and there was times i cried so hard and thought it would never get better but thankfully it did. We done a full disimpaction routine with him using pediatric plain laxido sachets. We started at 8 a day for about 2 weeks then little by little over the course of a few months worked it down to 1. We also introduced dulcolax sodium picosulphate which is a stimulant laxative. It doesn't just turn their poo liquid but helps their body recognise the urge to poo (my little boy had lost all feeling). We started the picosulphate at 5mls along with his one sachet of laxido. He was on both of those for roughly 3/4 months until we slowly reduced both. But we only reduced by tiny tiny quantities ever 2 weeks until he was on nothing!! That was an amazing day!! He has only JUST became dry at night though. That will take its own time. If you ever need more advice or just a chat I'm more than happy too. Xxxxx

Oh my goodness, I wasn't expecting that you'd have had to go through all of that! Did you end up going to the Drs then??I felt sure my boy does know when he needs to go because sometimes he hides? I also presumed he wasnt constipated because his poos are soft but not liquid...but I guess I dont really know what's going on with him, maybe he has a more physical problem and I've presumed its behavioural??

I can only comment on my experience with my son but I can say it was 100% physical. Before we knew what was going on we could tell him off for wetting and pooing his pants but the wee soul literally had no idea he was doing it as he was basically incontinent from holding his poo and stretching and damaging the nerves in his colon/rectum. I went to the doctor to get the laxido sachets. They originally only wanted him on it for 2 weeks but thanks to the advice of Eric I basically demanded they gave me a repeat prescription. GPS are notoriously Ill informed when it comes to childhood constipation. And I ordered the picosulphate from an online pharmacy thanks to some great advice I was given from contenance nurses. If your little one has dark smelly sticky poo streaks in their pants then I'd say they have the same issue my boy had.
