Movicol or osmolax?

Hi we are in Aus so not sure if it’s an Australian version or what ever but my nearly 6 year old son has been on osmolax for around 3 years. However, all the posts on here say they’re using movicol. I’m just wondering if anybody knows the difference between them? Whether one is better than the other or anything like that. Obviously we are still having major issues or I wouldn’t be on here lol. We’ve done disimpactions using osmolax but I only ever see the dosage guides for movicol. Should we switch?

Hi Mandy,

This my not be relevant anymore! I’m in NZ and we too use Osmolax. I’m told it’s the same as Movicol but without the electrolytes so easier to get the kids to drink as has no taste. We are in our second disimpaction with it but have the same issue on maintenance dose in that it can cause uncontrolled bm. i’m Thinking this may be us just not getting the dose correct. Have tried lots of other products but this seems to work best to clear things out!

Hi cath. We switched to movicol from specialists advice and it made a massive difference. It could have beeen a collection of things but it seemed to be the first time we really got him flushed out properly. We are staying on movicol now.

That’s good to know. Did you ever have issues with maintenance dose on Osmolax or now Movical. This is where we get stuck as find the right balance hard to achieve. It’s so frustrating. Thinking of asking for Senna but I have concerns with long term use of this....

Well yeah I guess we did as he kept getting impacted as the maintenance dose wasn’t enough. I used dulcolax during disimpaction and now when I notice he hasn’t done a decent poo for the day I give it to him that night so he gets it out the next morning. I think our main problem now is his attitude towards it all. He doesn’t like going to the toilet and doesn’t see why he has to. He says he can feel when he needs to go now and sometimes he’s great and other times he just doesn’t care. It’s driving me insane!!
