My son is 18 and has had epilepsy for 7 years, He was seizure free for a few years but the last year we have had a few. He likes to go out with friends and be the same as everyone else but drinking alcohol triggers a seizure the next day. Does anyone know if it is safe to drink non- alcoholic drinks, I know some of them say they have 0.05% alcohol in them. I would prefer he didn’t drink anything at all but he is struggling with being different to everyone else and this may help when out with his friends . Any experiences with this would be great. Thanks

I was in the exact same position as your son. Alcohol triggered mine. I struggled so hard to not be like everyone else, I just wanted to be the same. 18 is a tricky age. I got into a really important/ serious university course at the time so I needed to lessen the triggers to keep my place in the course. I tried the 0% alcoholic beverages and didn't like them (although they are safe) so ended up just drinking soft drinks when out. To this day I do the same. It will take your son time to adjust but it will get easier when he goes out. If he thinks of the pros of not drinking it may make it easier. I have alot of friends who do not drink through choice (not health related) , it is becoming more common. Good luck 👍🤞🍀
HI Karen,I started with seizures last year at 58, and have always liked a beer, so to be in the position not to drink re medications as been hard.
But I have also found that drinking non alcholic helps with your mental health as you are out so to speak. My advice to you son would be to start trying them out . There are lots to choose from some are good some not so, Nd it finding the ones he likes that are in the pubs/clubs he goes to that will be hard,
Another option we took was going to the local supermarket and buying a selection to test so to speak
will maybe try a few of them from the supermarket for him to try, Maybe make him feel like he is not missing out as much. Was just a bit unsure if they would affect him the same but I am sure it is the actual alcohol content that interferes with his medication so thought they maybe would be ok.
