Essential oils

Hi

Can anyone advise please.

I have been trying to figure out why my seizures have become worse since January. I have been admitted to hospital twice and have had an immense increase in my seizure activity. I have had medication changes but no help and my my rescue medication is not working too.

I tried to think about changes in my life that may have made the increase of seizures worse, the two main things were Covid in January ( not serious went into hospital due to seizures and they tested me for Covid, I had no symptoms. )Secondly , I have been using a home made face cream that my friend made which has geranium, ylang ylang , lavender and whipped butter. When I broke it down I actually realised that I had been using it since January as it was a Christmas present from her. I stopped using it and I have been seizure free for 6 days! This is the longest I have lasted since January, mostly I have been having them daily or every other day.

Has anyone else had any issues with essential oils, do the three oils go together or have they exacerbated my seizures. I’m confused. Any help or links to websites that could help me would be great. Thank you.

Hi there

I'm sorry to hear that you've been struggling with your seizures but it's good to hear you've noticed some positive changes recently.

We don't know what might have been a trigger for your seizures but I'm linking you to our information about complementary treatments. This explains which essential oils may be triggers for seizures: epilepsy.org.uk/info/treatm...

We can also send you this information with research links if you email us at aiinforequests@epilepsy.org.uk. Please let us know which webpage you want this for.

Some people have told us of changes after COVID 19. But there's still isn't a lot of research information into the effects of COVID 19 on epilepsy. We have a webpage which we are updating whenever we get new information: epilepsy.org.uk/info/daily-...

The PUBMED website is a useful one if you want to do any research yourself: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/

I hope this information is helpful.

Regards

Mags

YES! I once had a seizure after being given a load of EOs to smell by an aromatherapist (who knew I had epilepsy so should have known better). Since then I’ve actually started working with EOs (I make and sell soaps and other cosmetics) but I’m careful which ones I use, as some have been linked with seizures. I’m not aware of any of the ones you mentioned causing issues, but I could be wrong. I know that Rosemary, eucalyptus and sage are no-goes.
