Breastfeeding

Hi I’m currently 15 weeks pregnant through IVF. Due to the nature of conception and personal reasons I would really like to breastfeed. I currently take 250mg/100mg lamotrigine daily. I’ve tried to find information on BF and lamotrigine and there’s nothing concrete that I can find. .Has anyone BF while on this medication? If so , have youany tips? TIA

I can only post a link to the BNF latest guidance (British national forumalry) which discusses pregnancy and BF and antiepileptics monotherapy.

Good luck with your pregnancy 😘❤️

I did find this link....pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/265... .....BUT, if it was me I would only take what my doctor said to heart. I'd discuss it with the obstetrician or your neurologist. After all you've done and congratulations ✨🎉✨, that would be my trusted source. Pregnancy was a challenge for me too....and I took all nature of anticonvulsants from the age of 15---I'm 81 and still happy with my meds. I never breastfed but truly understand the bonding you will experience. Check with the Doc😉 💕💕💕

Thanks I will completely go with the neurologist advises, I’ve only recently been happy with my meds after 35 years. Had a bad run with meds and an incompetent and negligent doctor

You hit on the secret ingredient right there...I'm thankful you have a good neurologist. When I was diagnosed we lived in Massachusetts, so my parents took me to Childrens Hospital in Boston. In my 40s when I'd been seizure free for quite a while...I got a bad neuro, wound up loaded with Tegretol and at the Mayo Clinic with a drug-induced lupus which thankfully went into remission after 8 years. Enjoy your pregnancy, so happy for you and happy you have good care.💕

Thanks Some really shouldn’t be allowed to practice. Mine was giving me 3 times maximum dosage which also isn’t suitable to women childbearing age. In my opinion my seizures weren’t bad only 1/2 every 6 months. Since the change of dr and weaning off that medication I’ve been seizure free and had stable meds for two years. I’m absolutely delighted. So no better time for this pregnancy

Hi Babytwinkle

Firstly congratulations.

If you want to breastfeed, having epilepsy and taking epilepsy medicines shouldn’t usually stop you.

epilepsy.org.uk/info/daily-....

It is suggested that you talk to your midwife or infant feeding adviser first, for advice about how to breastfeed safely.

There is also information on The UK Epilepsy & Pregnancy Register website and the patient leaflet you receive with your lamotrigine.

You may also find our general information on epilepsy and pregnancy helpful.

I hope all goes well.
