Phenytoin & EEG

after over 30 years of being seizure free and phenytoin reduced to 150mg daily have been told that phenytoin long term has side affects so consultant wants to change my meds. 10 days ago I had and EEG which appeared to trigger a Migraine followed by foggy head. After 30 years being stable and symptom free i now question whether despite risks i should remain on Phenytoin and work on reducing the dose. I have a stressful job which does not allow for this foggy head. Does anyone have any thoughts re Phenytoin or EEG experience ?

Hi I have been using phenytoin for many years.have been seizure free but continue on phenytoin. Evidently phenytoin causes bone thinning , and yes I have osteoporosis but am staying on the medication

Are you still on phenytoin? I have been on it for 34 years and for most of it I’ve been able to lead a normal life. I too have become aware of long term has side affects and after discussion my consultant has offered to change my meds to Keppra. After reading things about Keppra and running the risk of making things worse I am seriously stuck at a crossroads and don’t know what to do? What do you reckon?? I mean how many people actually get these long term side effects ??
