My partner has epilepsy and has grand mal seizures (every couple of years). He had one recently and then had another shortly after. I didnt react well at all. We were planning on having a family and i wanted to know if there is a high chance the baby would inherit epilepsy?

Dear Quentin19

Thank you for your post.

It can be difficult to see a loved one have a seizure. We’ve heard from others how knowing basic first aid for a seizures has helped them cope so much better.

If you think this may help you, here are a few ways you can learn first aid for epilepsy.

Sometimes epilepsy can run in families. To help you understand epilepsy and inheritance please view our webpage epilepsy.org.uk/info/inheri...

Here is a summary of our understanding of epilepsy and inheritance.

•The risk that a child will inherit epilepsy depends on:

•the type of epilepsy that is in the family

•which family members have epilepsy

•how old the family members were when they developed it.

•Some types of epilepsy have a higher risk of being inherited than other types.

•Some people don’t inherit epilepsy itself, but they do inherit a low seizure threshold.

•Between two and five in every 100 children born to parents with epilepsy will inherit epilepsy.

If you have any concerns please discuss it further with your partners doctor.

Regards

Diane

There is a very low to no percentage of a chance your children will inherit such. Epilepsy is not a genetic diseases. So please don’t worry about your future planning. Take care of your partner and keep yourself in less of a worry state and be calm. By doing so you each will be in a much healthier emotional state. A better approach in bringing a child in your family. 😊
