Am I at risk having had unprotected sex when my last Prostap injection was on Jan 4th 2013 after a six month course?

The patient advice leaflet for prostap doesn't actually say when it is safe to resume unprotected sex, it just says not to take the drug if you are pregnant, breast feeding or planning to become pregnant.

Not very helpful there !!

even the NHS own page on this drug doesn't say.

Prostap is also known as Leuprorelin Acetate, and I struggled to find any answer there either. Other than ample warnings not to get pregnant while the drug remains in you.

The only hint at the length of the drug remaining in the body, was an article which stated that tests done on the pituitary gland could give inaccurate results for up to 12 weeks after the next implant would have been due. Which is 3 months after the drug is wearing off.

I would definitely call your GP and ask for medical advice on Prostap, unless anyone else can advise from their own research or experience. To be on the safe side best try an avoid a pregnancy till you are sure it is well out of your system. 'Leuprorelin acetate' drugs are known to cause foetal deformity, spontaneous abortions and other difficulties, there are many documented cases of that sadly.

Oh and yes you are at risk because it is not a contraceptive drug, so if you think you might be pregnant so soon after the drug, you definitly do need to discuss it with your GP.

If you find out you are not then you must use condoms till the drug is well and truly out of you.

As your last injection would have been working until about 3 weeks ago and it can take a few months for the drug to get out of your system, I would definitely speak to your GP - it took about 3-4 months for my periods to restart and the chances of you having ovulated are small but it is possible. It's definitely worth seeing your GP and using protection at least until your periods restart.

I agree its best to check with GP or do a test. The length of time it takes for everything to return to normal varies greatly from person to person so it would be difficult to say. I was told however that it was important to use contraception when on treatment because if a pregnancy did occur it could damage the baby so best to get it all checked out.

Thanks everyone, I'm actually due my 3rd laparoscopy next week, and am not usually so silly. Anyway I'll soon find out. Thank you all for your advice.
