Anaemia

Has anyone with Endo also been diagnosed as anaemic? Wondering whether it's linked due to the blood loss or a separate issue all together!

Yes, I suffer with anemia due to clots, heavy bleeding etc, especially around my period. It makes me feel weak, shaky and dizzy. I take an iron and b vitamin supplement to manage it, and I realllllly notice the difference when I forget to take them for a few days! Hope that helps x

I've been prescribed iron tablets but find they make me constipated and then my endo flares! Vicious circle really.

Have you tried drinking beetroot juice? Far safer than iron tablets.

hello yes I have been on and off anaemic since my teenage years and now 41. I have had numerous iron tablets however they don’t work for me as I bled for a year and a half solid and had 3 iron infusions in hospital. I would say keep an eye on your levels via blood tests, it makes you feel rotten being low in iron xx

Perhaps ask your GP to prescribe tranexamic acid for you (you take it in tablet form approx three times a day, three days in the month, at the start of your period or beginning on day two). It will reduce the amount of blood you lose.

Take something healthy like beetroot juice to increase your iron levels and hopefully the tranexamic acid tablets will reduce the amount of blood you lose.

Really sorry to hear it didn't help you. Would you ever consider a hysterectomy when you're just a little bit older so near enough the same age as when you'd go through a natural menopause? x

I had endo and also anaemia (which is from Thalassemia trait). I had heavy bleeding and clots which made the condition really bad. Iron pills will be best taken under GP's supervision as it could damage liver from overdosing. Be careful.

Hi! Anemia has been an on and off problem for me since around 17(2008)! Diagnosed endometriosis last year at age 30 (2022). Usually it is worse when I've had surgery or was pregnant, but I have had bouts between then. I now take vitamins as a daily standard, just to reduce the chance of it happening again.

Hi! I’ve never had heavy periods, but have a long history of being slightly anaemic. (Very often they wouldn’t let me donate blood 🩸 , for example.) In recent years, I have developed chronic anaemia which is still not related to heavy periods, but possibly an autoimmune and/or absorption problem. I say this as I have had part of my bowel removed, but also have a chronic problem with fatigue/raised glands/joint pain which has not yet been diagnosed. I have been taking iron tablets for months and months with no particular improvement in energy levels etc and a constant struggle with constipation … I need to go back to the gp soon and let them know I’m still no better… I reckon I’ve got arthritis or similar, which is not uncommon for endo sufferers to have other chronic, autoimmune type conditions. (I have severe/deep infiltrating endo, involving bowel.) xxx

Yes, several times. I go on to iron tablets for a few months and it balances itself out but it's not nice. Very tiring and lots of digestive problems. I think it's quite common for endo
