Hi, hope you're recovering well from your op.

Diathermy is one of the three types of endometriosis removal; abrasion (ablation - removes top cells only), laser (diathermy - removes a few cells down) and excision (cutting - removes whole visible tissue and a bit of healthy tissue). The first two are more commonly carried out as they are quicker procedures and recovery time can be quicker (but that depends on the woman/ how much endo there is and where it is). The last one is the best as it removes all visble endo.

If some cells remain - cells can't be seen with the naked eye then endo will regrow. Unfortunately at the moment there isn't any way to see and remove each cell, so in summary yes endo will come back - there is more chance of it coming back with ablation and laser as these two leave some tissue present - the idea being to reduce and slow down regrowth.

Having said that recurrence is very different from women to women, and doesn't always come back with the same symptoms or in the same places, and it can regrow slow or fast; this can vary too pre and post surgery.

Sometimes diet affects it, sometimes hormones do, sometimes alternative therapies can help - it's about finding what works for you xx

Thank you for your response. Its just good to know if it does come back i will know what it is. I read diathermy isnt as effective and can come back with it. But its good to know for treatment should it return. Thank you ^_^ xx

Hi,

Hope you’re recovering well :)

I had my first lap in February and got diagnosed with mild endo. My doctor and consultant both think it is already coming back and now next week I’m starting zoladex to try and stop this. Suppose it can grow back at anytime!
