Is an ABI a hidden disability?

Hello

It’s six years since I had VZV viral meningoencephalitis and as a result an acquired brain injury. I suffer with panic attacks and anxiety as a result and find noise and crowds very difficult to deal with. I would like to take advantage of ‘relaxed sessions’ that are organised at this time of year for neurodivergent individuals so that I can enjoy some Christmas light trails. Thing is I have no proof of a hidden disability and obviously am not registered disabled or in receipt of pip or whatever it is that I need to provide proof on booking. How can I prove that I struggle with this hidden disability? What have other people done to address this issue? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi

I too had meningoencephalitis caused by the VZV virus nearly two and a half years ago.

I use ear loops to help with sensory overload if I have to go out. It helps drown out a lot of noises. When I go for hospital appointments etc I give them a card which helps them understand my situation. I got the card from the Encephalitis Society. It's a credit card size and says on one side,

'I had sustained a brain injury as a result of Encephalitis. Outwardly, I might appear fine, however I may have difficulties with my memory, thinking skills, fatigue, anxiety, seizures and my behavior. A good listening ear will support me greatly-your help is much appreciated'.

The cards are free. Take a look. The Society is very helpful and provide a great deal of support.
