Hi

What did the doctor say was causing it? Did they mention polycystic kidneys?

Hi Superswan,

Many people can be born with one kidney larger than the other, or with only one kidney and never know until they are tested for something. As long as the kidneys are doing their job that is the main thing. Have you asked your doctor what your kidney function level is.

Why did this information come to light? Are you having medical problems with your kidneys?

You are welcome to ring our freephone Kidney patient Helpline number 0845 601 02 09 and I will be happy to speak to you. I am enclosing a link to the NKF website with information which you might find helpful

Hi, like Pauline from NKF Helpline has said, there could be alsorts of reasons for this and still be their job correctly.

Please don't panic until you have asked more question and possibly had more tests.

Best wishes Niki

do you know what your function currently is? have they given you any indication what it might be? as tfc5 mention it could be polycystic kidneys (which is what I have) as this does cause enlarged kidneys. but again until you have heard all from your gp and specialist (if you have been refered) then I wouldn't worry too much as this can agrevate polycystic kidneys if in deed that is what you have.

again best wishes

Niki

Hi Superswan,

The diabetes might be the problem here, you need to keep this well controlled as it can have an effect on kidneys. Please don't worry that what happened to your mum will happen to you. Your GP should regularly monitor your kidney function levels and any problems will be detected early.

Best wishes,

I have been having backpain for the last 12 months, and every so often burning when passing water, as kidney desease ran in my family I thought I best get it checked out and my doctor decided to get me to send off a urine sample and the made me an appt. for a ultrasound and that was for today. The lady that did ultrasound asked ,me if I new I had one kidney larger than the other, to which I replied no, so now making apt back at doctors when results go across.

Hi. I have one kidney very much enlarged, also scarred, and was told that the probable cause was repeated urinary infections. As I suffered constantly with acute cystitis when working abroad for 6 years in the 1950's when no medication was available, i think this points to a need for UI's to be carefully treated and monitored. All the best.
