I’ve been really struggling with choosing takeaway meals or eating out. I gave up eating Chinese food and Indian food as I would vomit almost immediately within an hour of eating, but now I cannot tolerate any meal that I haven’t cooked myself. My eGFR is 30- 27 as it fluctuates between bloods. Can anyone help me with this, my husband feels guilty for asking for a takeaway or meal out as he knows it isn’t pleasant for me. Many thanks for taking the time to read this.
Trouble Eating takeaways/ meals out and ... - Early CKD Support
Trouble Eating takeaways/ meals out and becoming unwell.
HI Purple, Not sure why you are vomiting after eating take out. Not usually something due to CKD, at the stage you are. Make sure you bring this to your doctor as you may have other issues going on. When ordering out, try not to get sauces, fried or other heavy foods. Request low salt and no added anything like butter, dressing or gravy. Both Asian and Indian foods have a lot of hidden oils used in cooking. The fat may be too much. Try asking for steamed foods instead like rice and veggies. I would also think about where you are getting your food from and if they are staying clean and up to health codes.
Thank you for replying, I am speaking with my Renal consultant tomorrow, I will ask her about it. I am thinking it could be Gi issues ( irritable bowel) I always avoid fried / oily foods, and stick to plain foods rather than highly seasoned at home when cooking. I have to avoid tomato based sauces as I have Renal Stone disease and high potassium levels.
Tandoori foods are marinated in yoghurt and then baked so no added oils etc. Also low calorie because. So a good choice in Indian take away.
Hello there purple-1974! Bassetmommer & Hily both have very good advice. Hily mentioned that Indian cuisine may contain yogourt. Remember that dairy is also high in potassium. It may have been that which caused your vomiting issue, especially if your potassium levels are already high.
Also, Bassetmommer mentioned ordering your takeout steamed with no salt where possible. That’s a great idea as well. But also, when your husband is craving takeout meals, & the no-salt option is not available, you could try to make your own home-made version of the same meal. True, it is a little more troublesome, but at least you’ll be able to join him (& maybe somewhat “fool yourself” - Lol!) in enjoying a similar meal.
But most definitely speak to the members of your medical team to help you determine why restaurant food is causing you so much digestive distress. I know when my potassium was high, I would suffer terrible bouts of diarrhea & vomiting also, complete with heart palpitations, perspiring profusely, & sometimes, even passing out.
I hope you find some of this helpful, dear. I wish you all my best! Do take good care of yourself & please keep us posted on how you come along. God bless. 🙏🤗👍👍✌️
My potassium is really high at the moment so this is being thought to be the issue.
Yeah. I would say, “been there, done that”, but unfortunately, I’m not done yet. Lol! 😃 I still have high potassium levels as well. But I’m sorry that you’re going through this too. I can certainly identify with you on this.
This past Christmas was difficult, just as most special occasions are for me, because I can’t eat the same foods that everybody else can. And if I do, I pay for it big time. My favourite “cheating” snack has always been potato chips. My sister likes the unsalted chips and so do I. But salted or unsalted, if I indulge in potato chips, I start feeling a little sick. I try to stay well-hydrated, and I walk quite a bit every day, and this seems to help somewhat. However, I think the best thing for me right now is to lay off the potatoes, tomatoes, nuts, seeds and dairy for awhile. All of this stuff is still lying around my house and I hate to be wasteful, so I’ve been nibbling on these leftovers little by little. My bad.
Have you found that drinking more water daily and walking helps you with this? It seems to help me. If you haven’t tried this yet, it may be worth a try. What has your doctor suggested?
Takeaways are a nightmare for me too, so I know where you are coming from! I won't go in a Chinese as they do use a lot of MSG also not too clever with soy, I gave up gluten as well, which means Chinese is not good as they use gluten in tons of stuff! Indian I can have on occasion- but I am certainly not where you are at with your kidney function. My friend who is on kidney dialysis though will always go for a vegetarian curry and plain rice when he has an Indian . It is a pain making everything from scratch. Just thought - have you tried Thai food - they tend to do steamed rice and they don't have heavy sauces. My go to takeaway now tends to be places where I can get a jacket potato! (Lucky for my husband local chippy does jackets as well)
Hi, I am so glad that I am not alone, I’ve tried Thai food steamed rice and vegetables but still not great, I’ve had a telephone appointment this week with my consultant I am at stage 3 b eGFR is 30, my potassium is quite high so it most likely is causing discomfort. She recommended trying a plain pasta dish next time without tomato sauce. This might be ok but I am not going to go out for any meals or takeaway until my potassium levels is better.
I tend to go towards risotto in an Italian - usually pick woodland mushrooms if they do them- but I am still waiting for results- so my diet will probably have to change. I have spent a few nights in the smallest room after takeaways, one time in the Indian I almost passed out after eating a poppadom! Broke out in a cold sweat and went very very dizzy. Not nice! I went gluten free earlier this year and it has helped to a degree.
Hello there, meggiemog! Forgive me for sounding stupid, but what is a “jacket potato”? It sounds interesting! 😊👍
What purple 1974 said! Must admit it made me smile - I suppose if you haven't come across this it would sound really funny! I would never eat currant cake when I was little as my brother would tell me it was fly pie
Hi Purple, I would suggest you see an Allergist and ask for your Tryptase levels to be checked as this sounds like an allergic response. Good luck and I hope you find an answer.
