Wanted to have some clarification on the following:

E gfr is expressed as per 1.73 sq.m.of body surface area (BSA).if someone has smaller or bigger body surface area will it change his /her egfr?

HI Vindadhun,

There are things that do affect the GFR. From what I have read, yes body size does impact. It was hard to understand how much in what I read. Things like race and age also impact the GFR. Where the lab was drawn and how they calculated it will impact the numbers. That is why in diagnosing kidney disease, they look at other factors such as creatinine.

I didn't know that EGFR had anything to do with body surface area. I have only seen it as a percentage. Where did you read that?

Values are always written as

/1.73 sq.m.

Yes you are right. Interesting. I don't know why they do that.

They do it because kidney size is proportional to body surface area. Bigger People have bigger kidneys.

Good point I did not know that. National Kidney Foundation does mention body size. Perhaps is why my Doctor diagnosed me at 3b when test showed 3a. kidney.org/atoz/content/gfr
